Where to dump road salt and dirt in Duluth

West Duluth Spring GritThe spring ritual of sweeping up excess road salt from sidewalks, curbs and boulevards leaves some Duluthians wondering what they are supposed to do with their bucket of grit.

The city of Duluth’s communications office recommends four dump sites.

  • Chester Bowl Park, near the playground
  • Duluth Heights Community Club parking lot
  • Piedmont Community Center, near the hockey rink
  • Wheeler Field, in the back

The collection sites are large, green, roll-off dumpsters marked with a sign. They are open to all Duluth residents to use but are limited to only road sand, salt or asphalt chunks. Sites should be ready by the afternoon of April 7.

Street sweepers collect road sand from the streets as quickly as possible in the spring, but any additional cleanup help from citizens is appreciated. If not picked up before the spring rains, the sand washes into streams and can damage sensitive trout habitat.
