Minneapolis Star Tribune: Nye’s Polonaise Room to close next year

Nye’s Polonaise Room, a Minneapolis fixture, will close next year, marking the end of an era of polka and piano. Owners of the bar and restaurant, located across the Mississippi River from downtown, told their 35 employees Monday that Nye’s will shut its doors after 65 years in business. Home to the “The World’s Most Dangerous Polka Band,” Nye’s has been a local landmark for decades. In 2006, it was named by Esquire magazine as the best bar in America.

I spent a couple of days in the twin cities back in 1970 on business, and a couple of nights in Nye's. This is one of the great party bars in America. I watched it the other night on Diners, Drive Inns and Dives. It looked just like it did 44 years ago!

Like many long time establishments they are slowly but surely fading into the sunset.

I like that they're razing Nye's for more condos. Nice touch MPLS. So many memories of a toothless Ruth and some filthy red booths that couldn't quite supplant the feeling of everything else I'd loved about an era long gone. If I'd known then that the 90's were my 60's, I might've treated them with more respect. But they were so sloppy. It's like America was that Duluth car sliding downhill backwards through a busy intersection while taking its own date rape drug and wondering why it was sore in the morning. For you hipsters too young to remember, it was reasonable to assume the world really would end on Y2K. Here we are again though, having to wait another 12 years for Jesus to return and send Paul Lundgren back to hell. It just doesn't seem fair.
