Day labor services in Duluth area?

I am helping my grandma move from the Duluth area at the end of the month. Since estimates on hiring a moving company from Duluth to Minneapolis are pretty steep, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on day labor services where we could hire a person or two to help with the actual loading of boxes/furntire into the truck, etc. Any recommendations are much appreciated.

I had a similar situation and found two good, strong, college students to do my heavy lifting and moving for me by posting on the UMD student job board.

When I posted the job, it was a pretty easy process, I got responses quickly, and was impressed by the students who showed up to do the work. Back when I was a UMD student, I also got several jobs by replying to postings on the job board.

On the other hand, I would not recommend Craigslist. I'm sure there are some great people on there, but two separate times I have responded to ads for workers on Craigslist and had people show up who I later found out were convicted sex offenders. One of them stalked me for a while and sent me graphic sexual e-mails. Not cool. Even though I have had other positive experiences via Craigslist, I will no longer go on there to find people to do work for me.

What is the liability on something like that if someone herniates?

I would assume that the injured worker would sue you and then, provided you own your home and have homeowner's insurance, you would put in a claim to your insurance.

If I recall correctly, UMD requires all students to have health insurance, so this could help with liability concerns.

There's Labor Ready on Grand Avenue. The contractor I work with has hired them to haul drywall into job sites. They've had good luck with most of them. The occasional one will just wander off if he decides he doesn't want to work that hard.
