Granada Stage Bar

Here is a photo I took of the Granada Stage Bar during a snow storm in the early 1980s, a few years after moving to town. I don’t know or remember anything about it, including its actual location. In my mind I think it was on Superior St, but that organ has been wrong on a regular basis. Anybody have any knowledge of it?

Granada Stage Bar was at 118 E. Superior St., which is the Lake Place Building, presently right next to the Last Place on Earth.

In the 1930s and 1940s it was called the Granada Beer Garden. From 1950 until the mid 1980s it was the Granada Stage Bar. After that it became Murphey's Restaurant and Bar. There was a big fuss when the Fond-du-Luth Casino opened and wanted a liquor license, because the owner of Murphy's was convinced it would kill his business. Whether that was the reason or not, Murphy's closed in the late 1980s. After that the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce occupied the building for about a dozen years before moving up to First Street.

There was also a Granada Theater, which was across the street at 109 E. Superior St., next to Coney Island and now the location of the city-owned parking ramp by the casino.

There is a cheesy Granada Theater Memories page on the Super Seventies website with numerous photos.

This kind of solves something that came up in the "Last Place on Earth -- 1983" post. Someone wanted to know about Chester's Used Books and Records, which apparently occupied the Granada in 1986, according to the above photo.

Location is correct. I remember it well. During the early 1970s, Benny the bartender would inform patrons starting at about 12:55 a.m. that it was "Hotel motel time!" I always headed for Superior at about that time to get another hour of bar time in. Too young to know better.
