Jim, if you ever feel like you need an opposing vantage point for your research, you could attach your camera to the bottom of an Easy Star RC plane, like these guys did on some northern Minnesota lake (not sure which one).

(By the way, I recommend turning your speakers down or off when watching this video. There’s nothing to hear except the airplane motor.)

Are you immune to the nut-squeezing ice water, or were you lucky enough to catch a warm current on the north shore?

Lake Superior is quite warm in Duluth during July and August. Last year I swam into September although this year not so much. But in summer the rule of thumb is, if it’s sunny and there’s a breeze coming in off the lake, it is pooling warm water up against the shore. But the same day in Grand Marais under the same conditions would likely still be cold IMO because all their warm water is being blown towards Duluth. OTOH, the lake water at Washburn WI is probably still swimmable even as I write this b/c they are shielded by the terrain from the currents that suck the warm water away.

Rumor has it Geddy Lee swims in Lake Superior to keep his voice high.

I’m going down there today to try my luck – maybe I can sound like Ronnie James Dio.
