Moving Planet Day, 9/24 – Ideas

Duluth could afford to have its own version of this worldwide event being sponsored by 350.org. It’s a day to get people out of their cars and onto their legs, or else out of fossil-fuel dependence and onto other kinds of wheels — even electric-powered. Looking for folks willing to turn out in a bike/skate/walking parade or sit at a table.

Here are ideas for signs:

1. What if you knew it would get so hot the forests would die, then burn, and all the lakes dry up?

2. If I wanted to live in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas or Missouri I would have moved there, for their summers and winters.

3. Moving Planet Day, September 24th, is a day to park our cars and trucks and move ourselves (walk, pedal, run, go electric!) Visit 350.org to see some waves of change — atmosphere abuse can be restrained!

4. The world used to be a slower-paced place. As we try to go everywhere and do everything faster the climate gets hotter. Slow down, save $$ by not buying gas. Consider a freer lifestyle including errands that burn calories, not petroleum products. What was wrong with the pace of the Oldtimers…?

I'll be starting a 65-mile hike on the 24th. Does that count?

If it's visible to one person who's sick of riding around in a gas guzzler, who decides to park the thing or even sell it, it counts!

Unfortunately Tanya, our current circumstances necessitate riding around in a gas guzzler, so parking it and selling it is not an option for us.

That said, however, prior to the two vehicles we now own, the last time I owned a vehicle that employed an internal combustion engine was in 1995. The non-car streak ended for me in 2006.
