Cheap date for North Shore hikers, agoraphiles

For the price of a few gallons of gas, you can have a full, free day at Split Rock Lighthouse. It’s the annual open house for Minnesota State Parks, so park admission is free. So is admission to the Minnesota Historical Society Split Rock Lighthouse site.

Did I make up word, “agoraphile”? It’s the opposite of an agoraphobe (someone afraid of crowds). The park and especially the Lighthouse will be crowded!

By the way, gas is often 3-4 cents cheaper per gallon in Two Harbors. Something about Hugo Chavez…

Often, but not always. I live in Duluth and work in Two Harbors and lately it's been a few cents cheaper in Duluth, actually. The difference is no more than a nickel, typically, either way. I generally fill up in Two Harbors, though, because I buy the THHS Band Card which gives me 3¢ off a gallon year round.

By the way, if you want good pie while you are traveling the north shore, I suggest Rustic Inn pie over Betty's. Just don't tell anyone I told you.

I've not been to Rustic Inn, but I'll say that the Scenic Cafe pies (and the blackberry tart) (and in fact the entire menu) are the best on the North Shore between Duluth and Two Harbors.

Agree 100% on the Rustic! I tell EVERYONE to go there over Betty's. The food is great and the pie even better. They even have a little bar in there now too.

Shhhhh. Don't come up here. The weather is terrible and they have run out of pies.

Sorry to continue the off-topic discussion, but had to add this: the food at Nokomis and New Scenic cafe some of the best in the state, let alone the North Shore.

...and you really don't need to go any further up the shore than that.

You should venture further up the North Shore for more terrific pie at Chez Jude in Grand Marais!

I love pie.

No, please ... stay south of Thompson Hill ... the Superior Hiking Trail is more crowded than the PCT, the GDT and the AT combined. No tent pads to be had!

(Though I do consider myself an agoraphobe ... but that's why I live here)

Seriously though ... enjoy it! The SHT is a gem within a gem within a gem, very nearly adjacent to a couple of other gems. Hell, the entirety of Northern Minnesota is one big emerald and sapphire necklace (green and blue ... get it?) ... and it cuts right through Split Rock S.P., as well as every other State Park on the North Shore ... so if youare* a bit agoraphobic like me and get a little weary of the crowds ... you might consider taking a short day hike up a spur trail and onto one of the prettiest trails I've ever set foot on. I've logged in over 250 miles on the Soup in the last 10 years and hiked every section between Crosby-Manitou and Castle Danger.

There's also another gem hanging out about 20 miles due east off Grand Portage, too ... it's about 50 miles long and about as close to being in the backcountry as you're gonna get on a tank of gas.

I know I'm a little late for a National Trails Day plug, but hey ... every day should be National Trails Day!

(+1 for the Rustic.)
