A quick google search reveals that nothing much of note seems to have happened anywhere on either of those dates, which perhaps in itself is something worthy of note. At least in Duluth.

Dave, although perhaps no one can say what happened on those specific dates, I can offer some historical context.
1851 is two years after Minnesota Territory was signed into existence by President James K. Polk. The territory had a population of about 10,000 American Indians and 5,000 white settlers at the time, and included the portions of North and South Dakota east of the Missouri River.
1851 is three years before the LaPointe Treaty was signed, making white settlement in Minnesota possible.
1874 is one year after Jay Cooke’s bank failed, precipitating a financial panic.
1874 is three years before Duluth lost its city charter and reverted back to village status. (City status was regained in 1887.)
To make this one more interesting, the first person to comment on where the 1851 Nothing Happened sign is located wins a weeklong pass to the Homegrown Music Festival.
Funny — I’d never seen the sign TouchdownJohnson posted, but I know where the sign Paul posted is. And I guess it would be pretty unethical for me to win a PDD contest, so I’ll let someone else take the prize home.

Hey Paul, I like things that are interesting…the 1851 sign is near the Zoo on the alley/driveway that connects Fremont and Waseca.
