Places to stay in Duluth

I am coming to Duluth in March next year and looking for some information.

  • Backpacker hostels or cheap, friendly places to stay.
  • How to get to Ely by bus or train!

Can anyone help?

You might try Arrowhead Transit -- they run once a week buses to the outlying areas.

The Chalet Motel on London Rd. used to cut me a deal if I stayed 3 days in a row or longer. $30 a night, no tax.

Another cheap hotel is Motel 6 in the West End. I drive by every day, and the sign reads $29.99 throughout most of the winter.

Also, what's the deal with that Arrowhead Transit website?!

"Fill in the information below and you will receive a schedule in the mail. BE SURE to mention which location you would like a schedule from in the "Comments" section."
Wow. Just ... wow. That's making the most of the medium. /sarcasm

Also, you might want to check with UMD and St. Scholastica. I'm pretty sure they both rent out dorms on the cheap during the summer, but not sure what the situation is during the school year.

Hey that's great news, many thanks.

Where is a good place to enjoy a beer and some food?

Where can I buy some outdoor/mountaineer gear?

@ riddle:

you can get both in the same building:

Fitger's Brewhouse. Awesome grub, great beer.
Trailfitters. fairly serious gear catering mostly to the backpacking crowd.

DeWitt Seitz in Canal Park has a plethora of fine establishments in which to nosh, and Duluth Pack is your outdoor store down there. some backpacking type gear, but mostly caters to the plush BWCAW crowd.

@Riddle

Fitgers for brew and munch. zra is right on about "plush". Go to Minnesota Surplus or Gander Mtn. I love Duluth Pack, but still a little bit pricey for me. Buy the packs, not the other stuff if you go there. Make sure you pick up a DSHT map when your there :^)

Also, where are you coming from? Because if you plan on backpacking in this area in March, you definitely need to know what you are getting into. March is still very much winter here.

I love the Voyager Lakewalk in. $40 for a single person room.

gander mtn = repube boycott material. after the todd palin incident last year, i just can't bring myself to go there.

mn surplus never seems to have what i want/what i'm lookin for. if you're in the market for a knife, pac boots or don't really have too many weight concerns...hit up mn surplus.

I am coming from the UK, as a country we are not used to the snow! As the recent news will tell you. We've had about 6 inches and the country has ground to halt!

I know it will be cold and snowy, that's the reason I am coming to northern Minnesota!

I will have to hire a car to get up to Ely.

Riddle, I think you can probably find a ride share up to Ely if you don't want the expense of a car, but ... Public transit in these United States is not what you are accustomed to and you may decide you need the car for flexibility and to meet time deadlines on your trip.

As for great backpacker gear ... I saw a guy wearing a granite gear hat on a guy today and took a little trip down memory lane of thousands, no make that tens of thousands of miles of backpacking around the world with Granite Gear stuff in the early 90s. This is a good company that is (like Duluth Pack) based in these here parts.
