I was requested to post this by Fred Smith and I'm quoting his email verbatim. I don't usually do this, but I made an exception in this case. - Ironic1

Wisconsin residents, get out and vote April 1! The balance of the state Supreme Court is at stake with a ten-year term up for grabs, and the race is as polarizing as the presidential elections. It's also got eerie parallels to John Grisham's latest novel. It seems to be part of of nationwide strategy to gain control of state supreme courts.
warning! not for the faint of heart.
our tax dollars at work

I don't remember anyone mentioning this. Comments?
I personally thought the use of a Meow Mix commercial was creative.
If you are like me and don't watch television much you had no idea to what Starfire was referring. So here's the clip.

There are a lot of events happening tonight, but if you have an interest in journalism, British politics or Gordon Brown, I highly recommend tonight's presentation by Gerard Baker, United States Editor and Assistant Editor at The Times (London). And I'm not just saying this because it's my job to promote Alworth Institute for International Studies events.
I'm really excited about this guy (Gerard Baker). He held an informal discussion with journalism, writing studies and communications students and faculty last evening, and I found him utterly engaging. Baker will speak this evening on British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in the Library Fourth Floor Rotunda at 7 p.m. Given Brown's recent decision to nationalize troubled U.K. mortgage lender Northern Rock, Baker, who previously wrote for the Financial Times and worked at the Bank of England , will be able to offer insight into the consequences Brown's decision will have on the current economic crisis in both the U.K. and the U.S.

I'm joking of course, Mike Huckabee actually does not believe in science...
(and is it just me, or does it seem like his eyes are looking at two different things?)
I don't really think that PDD is the place for these national campaign things. As long that we're doing it though, I want to point out that the Obama campaign is more than just music videos. There's a real candidate here too.
From today's Wonkette:
And here’s another funny thing: If Barry Obama becomes president, we’ll have a president eight years younger than Sonic Youth’s bassist. Think about it.

Report on NAWC's vigils, forum & potluck
In support of the ongoing national Iraq Moratorium Project the Northland Anti-War Coalition held 3 events on Friday, January 18. Despite the below zero weather, we went ahead with both of our Twin Ports peace vigils that day. Seven hearty souls showed up at the noon Duluth vigil [Colette K., Tegan W., Carl S., Peter K., Roger C., Penny C., Adam] and two people showed up at the 4pm Superior vigil [Mer? and Adam]. I'd like to extend a very special thanks to those brave souls who risked nose and cheeks for the cause of peace by picketing on such a bitterly cold day!
That same evening, in the nice, heated Central Hillside Community Center, we held a forum titled "Native & African Americans Speak Out on the War." Between 50-60 people attended. While one of our speakers didn't show up unfortunately, the three that did did a bang up job. Tanya Sconniers shared the interesting perspective of being an African American educator and peace supporter married to an Iraqi man. Jim Northrup shared his experiences as a Vietnam veteran, along with some awesome poetry, and Henry Banks powerfully drove home the point that there is a war going on right here at home against people of color, and how before the U.S. goes abroad to fix problems, it needs to clean its own house. Virgil Sohm was the moderator, and also filled in for the missing speaker by sharing some of his own insights and experiences on war and racism. The presentations generated some lively discussion, which continued well after the formal part of the forum was over.
Special thanks to the speakers and moderator for doing such a great job. Thanks also to Colette K., Peter K., Joel K., and Mike R. for bringing snacks and refreshments, staffing the literature and food tables, and helping with the set up and after event clean up. And of course thanks also to everyone who helped to build the forum. Between the great plug in the Duluth News Tribune the day before the event, a spot on KUMD radio that morning, and then the hundreds of leaflets, calls and emails that we sent out, we can be proud that we did a great job getting the word out about this very educational and moving event.
And then, to celebrate, and to kick back and do a bit of socializing, NAWC sponsored a potluck/social gathering the following evening, Jan. 19. About 20 people participated in the event, which was graciously hosted by Joan N. at her magnificent home. In addition to good food and company, we were treated with the opportunity to meet and talk with a young exchange student from Baghdad.
A warm thank you to Joan N., Colette K., Peter K. and Carl S. for helping to set up for the potluck, and clean up afterwards.
We had some great events these past few days, but the fight for a better world, of course, goes on. To borrow the famous words of Maurice Bishop, we must go "forward ever, backwards never!" In that spirit, I invite all who are reading this to attend the next planning meeting of the Northland Anti-War Coalition. That next meeting will be on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2pm at the Chester Creek Cafe in Duluth. And bring a friend!

Nice interview, jackass:

Barb Olsen, who writes the Out of Order! column about the Duluth City Council for the Reader , has been doing a radio version for us on KUMD. This week she's introducing a segment called "the Columnist and the Curmudgeon" that features former City Councilor Russ Stewart ( the curmudgeon, obviously). They're talking about the Lakeside liquor ordinance this week with brand new City Councilors Todd Fedora and Jeff Anderson. Next week they'll talk about outdoor drinking areas for local bars with Nick Patronas, who owns Aces.
Check it out, Wednesday morning at 8:15. I'd love to hear feedback from any of you political junkies. It will be podcast after it airs, too.

I've been an Edwards supporter since he ran for Vice-President with John Kerry. Then I had the pleasure of meeting John Edwards when he helped me escape the mad rally at UMD and my estimation of him grew. And I think he's the guy to run this country. And this quiz just confirmed it, as scientific as it is! :)
(Interestingly enough, I took the MPR version of this quiz and scored the same!)
Who's your candidate?
(sorry about the crazy html crap going on.. the table didn't want to do what I wanted it to do so I had to rig it a bit.)
I read today that the city council passed a resolution by a vote of 6-3 on Monday asking the Legislature to vote to rescind the 1887 annexation agreement that prohibits alcohol sales in Lakeside--which would then apparently bounce the issue back to the council for a final decision.
I note, too, that Mayor Bergson apparently intends to veto said resolution, citing the "promise that was made many years ago [120 years, to be exact] to the citizens of New London." He cites as well the fact that the great majority of correspondence that he has received on the issue from concerned Lakeside residents has been opposed to the potential opening of alcohol sales.
“It’s their neighborhood,” he said. “Who am I or anybody else to tell Lakeside what their neighborhood should be like?Since I, at least, would welcome alcohol sales in Lakeside, I took the opportunity to let him know that. Although the fact that the yeas' six votes would be enough to override any potential veto in the waning days of everyone's terms, I have the feeling that this issue may be around for a bit. So if you live down in Lakeside you may want to weigh in, if just to correct the record.
I think the alcohol sales ban is an odd relic of the 19th century, and so do most people I know--why some subset of our neighbors remains so attached to it is something on which I'm unclear. If one of you is out there in the great beyond, perhaps you could enlighten me.

This might interest some of you because Vicki Gowler is quoted in it. She is the former editor of the Duluth News Tribune who left to become editor of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Now she's the editor of the Idaho Statesman, and making national news with continuing coverage of the Sen. Craig arrest.

alas, the last bastion of "free speech" (read: the ability to slander and slag a person anonymously in an open forum) has fallen.

Don Ness, Sr. performing at UMD in "An Evening of Foolish Ness"

Assisant Homeland Security Secretary Julie Myers has applogized after awarding first prize in a holloween costume contest to a white man dressed as an african american in a prison outfit. Myers, who also heads the Imigration and Customs enforcement said she deeply regretes that this has happened. The winner was dressed in a stripped uniform, dreadlocks, and dark makeup.

For Immediate Release
The felt puppet running for Mayor of Duluth, Minnesota has been shot at a rally in front of about 100 people by unknown assailant/s who are still at large. The candidate had just delivered a PowerPoint presentation on his "New Freshness" plan for Duluth. The unknown number of assailant/s fired from a crowd and disappeared amid the ensuing chaos. The candidate's assistant, Allen Richardson of Gonzo Science, did not immediately return phone calls seeking comment. All video was confiscated by an apparent Homeland Security agent at the scene. A number of blurry digital stills from different angles have surfaced that will be posted and analyzed at www.myspace.com/mrniceformayor.
