Chester Creek Sweep
This Saturday, May 3, 2008 from 9-11am
Meet at Burrito Union at 8:30 to sign up
1/2 price burrito, free soda, and free t-shirt for volunteers.
Come help clean up one of Duluth's gems (and of course now part of the SHT). I heard about this on my Brewhouse newsletter. I figured as much time as I spend at Chester, and as much as I hate seeing it trashed, I definitely have some sort of obligation to help out. Anyone else planning on going? I figure it'll be fun. Although I think I'll skip the free soda and just get a hempen ale afterwards. It'll be 5 o'clock somewhere! right?
This is a reminder to set your clocks ahead an hour tonight.
This is also a wake up call that daylight savings time actually wastes energy instead of conserving it, as we've been led to believe.

I Falls is now officially the "Icebox of the Nation," legally edging out Fraser CO for bragging rights and the title...
"In 1988, a meteorology professor at St. Cloud State University submitted an affidavit saying Fraser can’t be the nation’s icebox, “because 11 months out of the year its meat would thaw and its ice cream would melt, while throughout the winter all meat and ice cream would be safe in International Falls.”
Incedentally, this morning's low temp in I Falls: -30 with an expected high of -22...and a wind chill of -47 to -44.
Fraser CO: a balmy high of 35, low of 3.
This Sunday, February 10th the Eco Home is having an open house. It's a home demonstrating solar power, and basically everything you could do to make a home sustainable and eco friendly and energy efficient by using green building practices. Come check it out and bring some friends. There is also a lot of other literature about sustainable living and what you can do to reduce energy consumption. Take Superior St. to 52nd Ave East, go up till you get to the dead end, take a right onto Broadwing Drive, take a right onto Snowy Owl Circle, follow to 2809. There will be a big Eco-Home sign. visit www.womenworking.org to see pictures and get more info. Hope to see you there!

Fantastic opportunities for ecological living in an urban environment. Very cozy; somewhat precarious. Stop by for a self-tour any time. Don't wait for the thaw.
This weekend my friend Henry and I decided to make the best of the ample snow in the hills of Duluth. We both have a history of living in the mountains and spend a good amount of time hiking and skinning the steeps to find the best off-piste turns. Living in Duluth doesn't offer a whole lot of the steep and deep so we decided to go for a hike and do some skiing - regardless of whether it was only five or eight turns instead of the 50 or 100 we'd have gotten out West . Watch the 2:08 video we put together on YouTube.
Here is a pair of videos loosely tied to the holiday season. The first is only for the liberal rump runners, and the second only for those who can handle seeing grace jones and pee-wee together at once.

I'm not much of a Christmas-type person (my Halloween tree is 4 feet tall, my Christmas tree is 1 foot tall and was only there to appease my ex). But holy crap would I love to have these geeky ornaments on my tree!

I'm sure many of you have seen this truck or one similar. For those who haven't I thought maybe you'd like to be disgusted as well.

From The New York Times:
Water levels in the Great Lakes are falling; Lake Ontario, for example, is about seven inches below where it was a year ago. And for every inch of water that the lakes lose, the ships that ferry bulk materials across them must lighten their loads by 270 tons — or 540,000 pounds — or risk running aground, according to the Lake Carriers’ Association, a trade group for United States-flag cargo companies. As a result, more ships are needed, adding millions of dollars to shipping companies’ operating costs, experts in maritime commerce estimate.

I don't think I'll be asking for this at the Brewhouse anytime soon.
"Azmi...has received complaints that it is cruel to export the monkeys, which are destined for restaurants and research laboratories."

British Petroleum just made a $3.8 billion expansion of their oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana. After pouring billions of dollars into expanding the aging plant, they claim they don't have room to expand the water treatment facility, so instead have asked the EPA to let them dump 1,500 more pounds of amonia and 5,000 more pounds of toxic sludge into Lake Michigan. Read the story from the Chicago Tribune here.

thanks go to tony bennett for digging it up.
Makes my problems seem rather petty ..
I just stumbled across this article, maybe it's old news to you all, but it's frightening enough to read again and keep it from becoming just old news.

Just thought I'd add to the Lake Superior ice posts. Here's a video in which you can hear the sound of the ice shifting. It's like a giant hitting a giant high-tension wire with a giant mallet, only really giant sounding. It definitely loses something on translation, but you'll get a good sense of it if you crank your speakers.
EDIT:I have no idea why the video isn't working. It seems to be totally gone...I swear it was working last night just fine. I'll probably have to re-upload it later tonight. Sorry!

I know this is not A Duluth thing, but I want to point out the great work that is going on up here in Ely by some hard working and adventurious individuals. Will Steger is gearing up to set off to the artic one more time. This time, not to be a hardcore eplorer but to show first hand the effects of global warming on our beloved ice caps on the north. departure time is getting closer for the team and work up here is frantic and very exciting. I fell bad that all I give to the project is one night a week. It seems to be the least i can do. Please support this awesome effort and follow along with the gang online. Global Warming 101 Foundation.
The StarTrib ran this artical which goes into some of the details. Story Here!
