Google Fiber – Let’s Bring it to Duluth!
By SaumZ on Feb 10, 2010 in Geeky
Google just announced that it will be choosing one or more locations to put in a ultra high-speed broadband service to a community to serve as a test bed.
This could potentially bring millions of dollars to our area as well as spark a lot of new business to be formed on the back of this service.
Help promote Duluth as the test site for Google’s new 1 GB fiber. Here is the nomination form.
There is also a Facebook group that has been started to try and promote this idea across the Northland.

Very cool. Duluth seems like the perfect candidate for this.
No opinion either way…just wondering why Duluth is the “perfect candidate” for this.
Don Donny has toyed with the idea of having free internet for the entire city in the past. Also, we’re a college town. Plus, we seem to fit the bill when it comes to the size of the city they are looking for.
I was hoping someone would get the ball rolling on this. Heck, We have a Tech Village!
They chose us for their public transportation routing beta too.
We are 10 miles of hilly adventure, by which I mean to say we are long and hard.
As a city, I feel we WANT to be better.
We already worked with google beta-testing the google public transit mapping. Maybe we’ll be on the list aready??
I wasn’t expecting to get such a chuckle out of the comments on this topic….so thanks for that, Starfire and adEm!
We could be the first city with a Volunteer Fiber Department.
Mayor Ness was right when he said we need to invest in our future, this is a perfect example in doing that
This is very exciting and would be huge for our city
