This video was uploaded to YouTube on March 7, 2010 — 15 years ago today. It shows someone identified as “Pat” piloting a hang glider towed by a snowmobile on the St. Louis River in the vicinity of Spirit Mountain. “Flight goes as planned and pilot releases from tow at 500 feet over ground,” the YouTube description explains. “A minute later his landing flare goes awry. Hilarity ensues.”
The 1,000-foot Presque Isle struck the base of the Duluth Ship Canal’s north pier shortly after 7 a.m. today. The video above is by Conner Blaukat. The perspective below was shot by Mike Burbul.
Allison Simonson of Princeton, Minn., captured this rather unfortunate moment when a stilt walker took a face plant on the Duluth Lakewalk this past weekend. Ouch.

The Aerial Lift Bridge is closed to ship traffic after a 1,004-foot freighter ran aground in the Duluth harbor around 3:30 p.m. today.
It was ten years ago that KBJR-TV news reporter Julie Pierce made her famous slip-of-the-tongue while referring to the 1,000-foot motor vessel Walter J. McCarthy Jr. The video clip above, viewed more than 200,000 times in the past decade, also shows KBJR misspelling “McCarthy” on its graphic; so it goes.
This video is from the Nov. 10 snow/ice storm. It’s not as good as the one from 2003, but still … everyone loves a good car-sliding montage.
