Charles Obije, et. al. – “Let it Shine”

Duluth-area musicians join forces with DanSan Creatives, the city of Duluth and the U.S. Census Bureau in this music video encouraging everyone to complete the 2020 census form.

Vansplaining, Episode 1: Our Girl

Duluth’s Alan Sparhawk, a musician in various bands, most prominently Low, has a new web series called Vanspaining in which he chats with other musicians while helping them unload and load gear at shows.

In the inaugural episode, Sparhawk talks with the Brighton-by-way-of-London-based band, Our Girl about magnets. Featured in the next four episodes are Lord Friday the 13th, Cat Clyde, Mikaela Davis and Southern Star, and Chelsea Wolfe.

The Slice: Red Head Mountain Bike Park

The Slice follows the recreation group Mesabi Outdoor Adventures as members try out the new Red Head Mountain Bike Park, built on former Iron Range mineland near the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm, about 60 miles northwest of Duluth.

In its series The Slice, WDSE-TV presents short “slices of life” that capture the events and experiences that bring people together and speak to what it means to live up north.

Mary Bue – “Shit Storm”

Former and perhaps future Duluthian Mary Bue has a new 14-track album set for release on Aug. 21. The video for the opening track, “Shit Storm,” was directed by Jeremy Ylvisaker.

PDD Video Lab & UMD Viz Lab: Hartley Park Hike 360 Reframe

In this edition of the PDD Video Lab we’ve stolen footage from the UMD Viz Lab and added music. The video features hikers in Duluth’s Hartley Park, shot in a 360-video reframe technique. At PDD we’ve enhanced it simply by adding the title track from the Who’s 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia.

Torment with Collin Sabbatini – “Drown in Piss”

In this recently released clip from back in the days when people crammed together tightly for concerts, Duluth band Torment performs live at Blush with Collin Sabbatini filling in on vocals for Caden Dudek, who had been recently injured in a hit-and-run incident.

Trampled by Turtles – “Victory”

Trampled by Turtles performs the “official quarantine” version of “Victory,” a track from the band’s 2010 album Palomino.

Patrick Nelson – “Someone Like You”

Superior native and University of Minnesota Duluth alum Patrick Nelson has a track on Elliott BlaufussAirwavs quarantine collaboration record. Blaufuss is the producer; Nelson handles drums, bass and vocals on the track.

Thirty-three artists from across America started a long-distance musical collaboration resulting in a six-track EP.

Clinton Dexter-Nienhaus, head naturalist for the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog, presents the fascinating world of creek chubs, which build ridge-pit nests out of small stones they move in their mouths.

Presque Isle scrapes stone base of Duluth Ship Canal pier

The Slice: Gary-New Duluth’s Skatepark

A new skatepark is in the works in the Gary-New Duluth neighborhood. Mark Boben, president of the GND Development Alliance, describes how this undertaking is a community-wide effort. (Update: This video appears to have been removed from YouTube.)

Caden Dudek – “Sadist”

Caden Dudek, vocalist of the Duluth band Torment, has been recovering from a March 1 incident in which he was struck by a hit-and-run driver. In this video, he tests his vocals by covering “Sadist” by the Minneapolis band Reflections.

“A lot of people have been asking me if I can still scream since my accident,” Dudek writes on the YouTube video description. “The answer is YES. After six days in a coma, a tube down my throat, and heavy damage done to my lungs, healing has been quite the work in progress. I have refused to give up on getting my voice back. It has definitely changed my technique, but I really think I’m starting to get it down again. A traumatic experience like almost losing your life can really eat you alive mentally, but only if you let it. Thank you so much for the endless support, I owe you all my life.”
