Awning Edit

When did this happen? The riot of apostrophe errors on the Sir Ben’s awnings is gone. Here’s how they look now.

In case you missed them before, here’s what they used to look like, swiped from a previous PDD post:

Even better, the stray apostrophe on the Black Water awning has been fixed, too — but it looks like someone just blacked it out with a Sharpie.

What appears to be a new apostrophe after the D is bird dreet.

Here’s the before photo from a previous PDD post:

How is it that we have the technology and wherewithall to stop the apostrophy apocalypse, but cannot get a glass of water with a burger and brew?

    Apostroclypse Now.

When you’re dumping 2-3K on an awning, how does this get past all the people involved who were smart enough to start a business in the first place? It’s funny how something so simple and small can be such an ongoing reminder/cause for so much embarrassment.

I’m disappointed. The Ben’s awnings were a stop on my Duluth Oddities tour.

I wish I could take credit for removing the apostrophe at Black Water. I have been wanting to for a long time — thank you to whoever did this!

The Awning Apostrophe Cops are from the same department as Public Bathroom Stall Advertising Sign Cops. I defy you to find one of those signs that doesn’t have some kind of typo.

BW is still wanted by the letter spacing police.

I’ll take a little credit for the Black Water awning. I’ve been after them on Facebook to the point where they banned me from posting on their Facebook page. The apostrophe came down after I used an event to welcome the new manager as an opportunity to ask that his first official action be to remove the offending apostrophe. The apostrophe was down within a couple days. Yay!

Assuming neither of these have been corrected as well, the East Superior Street Tour of Bad Apostrophie’sâ„¢ still has some stops.

ShelDon is rocking this subtle one.

I just found an Unauthorized Use of Apostrophe on Scenic Cafe’s website, linking to menu “entree’s.” On the other hand, their autumn menu look’s delicious.

Emmadogs, the NSC menus look very tasty, except for the aged mimolette on the Endive salad… who wants to eat bug cheese?

(I suppose it’s no worse than casu marzu. Don’t google it.)

  13. emmadogs on October 23, 2012 at 1:25 pm

Oh Tamara, why did I not heed your warning??? That’s just disgusting.

    Casu marzu, from Wikipedia:

The larvae themselves appear as translucent white worms, about 8 millimetres (0.3 in) long.[1] When disturbed, the larvae can launch themselves for distances up to 15 centimetres (6 in). Some people clear the larvae from the cheese before consuming while others do not.

SOME PEOPLE clear the larvae?!?!? I’m going to go barf.

In general I support a good excess-apostrophe jihad, but I have to speak up in defense of ShelDon. It may be dated usage, but I don’t think it’s completely beyond the pale to adhere to the once-conventional notion of using apostrophe-s for the plural of a letter or group of letters, such as “URL.”

    See, for instance, this.

Big E, in the “plural forms and the apostrophe” section, “possessive” is misspelled once. Just sayin’.

    Heh. Touché.
