There are a lot of bands in the Twin Ports area — some great ones, and some not so great ones. For better or worse, what are the top five bands creating the most buzz in the Twin Ports? (TBT, Low, RGC, Parr excluded.)

I’m personally pretty excited about Red Mountain and whatever they’re going to put out.
My new favorite band is the Synthetic Cannabinoids … as soon as someone forms a band and calls it that.

“Buzz” can mean a lot of things. I will list 5 bands that meet at least one of the following criteria:
1. They actually play regularly
2. They have new material or are a new band
3. I want to see them when I see they are playing.
Loup Garou
The People Say Fox
The Fractals
The Fontanelles (not local, but play here more than 95% of local bands)
Canine Heart Sounds (although they are moving soon)
Personally, I think Low’s side project Retribution Gospel Choir kicked ass when they played dub sets with the DJs at Red Star this summer.
Some people think Red Star is a shit venue.
I once saw a fat chick giving a guy “a blowie” on the zebra seats in the back.
I pretty much agree that it’s a shit venue.
Actually Red Mountain had to cancel its sweet sounds for tonight. In its place you will find another buzz-worthy new band, Lion or Gazelle, performing around 10 PM. Also check out Double Bird playing later, which is 1/4 Duluthian. Double Bird’s last Twin Ports show was shut down by the cops, so you know they’re good.
Would this list also exclude Black-eyed Snakes?
Anyone seen Billy Don’t Be a Hero? I saw them once but haven’t heard much since.
Billy Don’t Be A Hero played Beaner’s last month, they’re still around.
There’s like a whole other scene that plays at Beaner’s these days separate from 21+ places like Quinlan’s and Luce… Just sayin’.
I think Loup-Garou’s probably get the most buzz at the moment, mainly because they kick ass.
The Vulnerable Adults is the most awesome band. Although there is no such band yet. Please, someone start a band with this name. I don’t care what you sound like. You would be Duluth’s most awesome band.

Well, it doesn’t confirm that there is no buzz, but it kind of leads to a sense that there isn’t a hot new thing right now.
Trampled by Turtles, Low, Retribution Gospel Choir, the Black-eyed Snakes and Charlie Parr are well established in Duluth and have an international following. So they’ve been excluded from this debate.
All of those acts are great, but they’ve been around quite a while — Retribution Gospel Choir is the most recently hatched of the bunch, having formed four years ago. Low has been playing for 17 years.
There are groups like the Hobo Nephews of Uncle Frank, Crew Jones, Cars & Trucks, the Boomchucks, the Keep Aways, the Little Black Books, Coyote, and many more that are also great, but also have a few years under their belts.
It seems like “buzz” in this context is, “What’s the brand-new must-see band?” Under that stipulation, it does seem like maybe there is no confirmed buzz at this moment in time. Give it another month.
I don’t get around much anymore, but the Fontanelles made me pee a little they were so good! Batteries has been around a while, but seems to be playing with new fervor … really great.
Other than that, someone tell me what to hear … dunno nothin’ since I quit running sound.
Dirty Horse is making a buzz among some circles. They’re worth seeing.
Excuse Me, Princess! is getting better with every show.
I’m inclined to say that the Two Beat Band is buzzworthy, but may have to abstain because I play guitar with them sometimes.

PS: Matt we call them “blowies” now do we? No wonder I haven’t been getting any action lately, I’ve been asking for the wrong thing! Also haven’t been hanging out on the zebra couch at the Red Star. And I probably won’t be until I’m sure it has been sanitized.

Last weekend, at Gooseberry (living up to its name) on the back side we accidentally stumbled upon this guy in a detroit starter jacket and transition lenses, on that hidden cove, doing this blond chick with a sizable rumpas in the back. I believe your people call this dog style. I don’t know if he was in a band, but it was pretty awesome, except for the fact that it fucking blew my hike and the hundred mile drive which accompanied it. Maybe he should start a band with that concept, I think it would cause quite a stir, maybe put all this other nancy fem rock shit to shame. Long live Hendrix

@girlfromnorthcountry, got no problem with “blowie” just trying to get in the loop or get on the good foot as you say. I think the term is hilarious. Way to go, Matt.
Gonna have to go with Matt Ray and Those Damn Horses … folks seem to be talking about how much fun they are live … caught them a few times (most recently opening for White Iron Band) and indeed, they are pretty fun.
