Duluth Does …?
Sacred Heart Music Center is gearing up to do another Duluth Does event in October and we are trying to decide on a theme. We have already done the Beatles, Woodstock, Johnny Cash and Neil Young and the Grand Ole Opry. We have some ideas but want to hear suggestions from the PDD community.
What artists or genres would you like to hear area musicians cover?
Our only criteria is that the music will work in the space, meaning Duluth Does Slayer or Megadeath is probably out, and that people will want to come out and support it as these events are fundraisers for Sacred Heart.
What’s your idea for a Duluth Does show?

I was going to say Duluth Does Duluth too. Everyone covers everyone else… but… probably less a draw. Duluth Does Danny?
Not by any means the one to go to for Floyd, but a Dark Side or The Wall would have a lot to work with.

Have you done Duluth does Dylan yet? Only makes sense since he was born just down the street.
There were two “…Does Dylan” albums in the last ten years or so, although I don’t think they were direct fundraisers for Sacred Heart.

I like the idea of Duluth Does O Brother Where, Art Thou. The venue would be good for the music. And, the musical themes would fit the venue. It was a popular soundtrack and film with cross-demographic appeal; that should make for a decent draw for fundraising.

Buddy Holly, He actually has enough material that is known to young and old. Also has that obtuse connections of Bobby Dylan seeing Buddy at the armory and deciding thats what he wanted to do with his life. Also, as mentioned above, having musicians do their guilty pleasures or as I call then closet favorite. Could turn into a real sap fest but it could be interesting. Otherwise hows about just doing favorite “pop” tunes

As far as matching the music with the space goes, I think Leonard Cohen is the best idea.
As far as getting a strong turnout goes, Rolling Stones is probably the best bet.
The best blend of both of those is probably Pink Floyd.
But Duluth Does Demento or Duluth Does Duluth are the shows I would personally want to see the most.

Why is there discussion about this? Obviously it has to be Duluth does NWA. I thought we settled this a long time ago.
Yeah, Ween at Sacred Heart would be great, and I guess Gartman already did the Ween cover thing a little while back. Black-eyed Snakes playing “Take Me Away” would be pretty badass.
There seems to be a resonance with the NWA suggestion … perhaps Coal Car Caboose laying down “Fuck tha Police”… I’d go to that.
I find most of these suggestions to have very little broad appeal. I hope the “powers that be” will exercise some reasonable amount of
discretion. I would 2nd Starfire’s bid for Duluth Does the Dead as they have a huge catalog and a broad based appeal across age and music styles. I can think of lots of their material I’d love to play given a chance.
PS: the Stone would be the only other reasonable group to consider once again due to their very well known catalog and appeal across age and styles.
I, personally, would want to see a show where there are covers I haven’t heard a thousand times before. I can already picture the set list of both Duluth Does the Dead and Duluth Does the Stones and it bores me to death.
Most people want to hear music they are familiar with. Let’s remember that the people, hopefully paying for tickets, probably aren’t jaded musicians but “regular folks” (whatever that is) who would like to hear something they can hang their hat on. I am pretty sure that isn’t NWA, Nike Drake, etc. But let’s not quibble, Sacred Heart will choose for us. I know most people think Lawrence Welk is square but I tell you what: he has been dead for 20 years and he still has a show on weekly network TV! 51 years and still counting! No other musician even has a show much less one that is been on half a century. The longevity is due to the fact that he has always played music that is familiar and the people like (maybe not you and me, but enough people that he is still on the air and we are not).

I changed my mind about the Grateful Dead and Rolling Stones shows, though. Somebody brought up the idea of Exile on Superior Street (technically it would be Exile on 4th Street), and I love that idea. Also, an evening of American Beauty would be awesome. I just don’t want to hear “Fire on the Mountain” or “Touch of Grey.”
Plus, we haven’t had a good album covers show since Duluth Does White, or the Let it Be show at Luce (to which I am quite biased, I suppose). Although, I did see the band SOAP from Minneapolis play the entire Animals album, by Pink Floyd, at the Rex.

Knifey, I hear your concerns. Nothing has been more detrimental the the Deads music than obnoxious deadheads playing really bad bootleg recordings of really bad versions of their really good songs over and over. Don’t need the ones you mentioned and quite honestly really don’t need the extended jams (although I love them….when its Jerry playing). There is enough real good songs to stand on their own.
@ W.T.F.: Welk’s show is on viewer supported Public Television.
The vast majority of contributors to PBS is, and has always been, people who are old enough to remember Welk’s show when it was a first-run variety hour…which is why PBS also drags out every variety and tribute show featuring every do wop and motown variety show during pledge drive week.
Zar so whats your point? Do those “old”people some how count for less? If it is viewer supported that means real people actually watch it as opposed to “programed” stuff which is basically shit that the networks throw on the wall to see what sticks. It is on 52 weeks a year not just during pledge week. Viewer supported, in a sense, is like an election, it means what gets played is the stuff the people who pay actually want to see. I’ve noticed at most of the Duluth Does events that a fair share of the paying customers are old enough to remember the Welk show when it was first run. I am sure Sacred Heart is more than happy to accept their money even if they are old and unhip as your message would seem to indicate.My original point wasn’t, lets do a Duluth Does Lawrence Welk show, it was just a observation in response to Knifes comment that paying customers often like to hear things they are familiar with. I have it on good authority what Jamie Ness has been exploring his Deadness lately, and I think more than a few bands have done their own versions of Dead covers.
I’ll agree that we need some more originality than that.

You want a broader appeal? Duluth does N.W.A. plus Ice Cube and Eazy-E’s solo stuff. Now that is broad appeal.

The Velvet Underground – Loaded. From personal experience, I know this makes a great show. Phish covered the album in Vegas one Halloween.
Every time I listen to the Velvet Underground, I think Healthy Band Music Club would do an awesome version of “Heroin.” I mean, Chelsea is Lou Reed. Right?
I love the Lawrence Welk show. When we had TV, I watched it almost every week. Even if I was going out, I wasn’t out at 7pm!

There are three critical elements to the Duluth Does… show — 1) It is a fundraiser for the venue, so it needs to be a good draw. Covers of Tim Kaiser’s stuff won’t bring in the throngs. 2) It has to be sonically appropriate for the space- Sacred Heart is not the venue for most of Led Zeppelin’s library. 3)The theme has to be attractive enough to the musicians who will perform for free. It is a fundraiser for the venue, so the musicians really have to love the material.
