SNL Skit: Duluth Live! from 2006

I had been trying to find this clip for ages, turns out it was right under my nose at funnyordie.com. I’m not sure if this has posted before, but I’d thought I’d share it anyways. Enjoy.

UPDATE: Sadly, there is no longer an embeddable version of the video online, but it is available on nbc.com.

This video was posted on PDD Jan. 16, 2006. It was a YouTube clip that has since been removed from YouTube, so thanks for re-posting it.

And Matt Perrine using the name “Fly High, Duluth” is now officially genius.

This is awesome! I can’t stop laughing.

@Danny G: Haha, my thoughts exactly.

    Brilliant.

Who are the actors? Especially the singer. I’ve probably only watched the show 2 or 3 times since 1993 and I don’t know any of the names, but many of the faces are familiar …

  9. Danny G Danny G on November 19, 2009 at 8:17 am

The singer is Bill Hader. The drummer is the (usually unfunny) Fred Armisen. The guitarist is (IMO) one of the funniest human beings on earth…Andy Samberg.

The actors were all the regulars of that year. Lead singer – Will Forte. Although the lead woman’s name escapes me – famous actress that guest hosted…..anyone recall?

  11. heysme heysme on November 19, 2009 at 8:19 am

Correction Danny G – I believe Bill Hader played the keyboard.

  12. Danny G Danny G on November 19, 2009 at 8:20 am

Oops…actually the singer was Will Forte.

    The lyrics:

    Fly high Duluth
    Your spirit has no measure
    Fly high Duluth
    The northland is your treasure
    We got people walkin’ talkin’
    Critters squeaky squawkin’
Yeah we got it all right here
    Fly high Duluth!

    Fly high Duluth
    On the wings of emotion
    Fly high Duluth
    Your spirit is the potion
    People tryin’ buyin’
    Kids are spyin’ lyin’
    Old folks lyin’ dyin’
Oh we got rebels makin’ love in the streets everyday, yeah…
    Fly high Duluth!

I know a little place called Duluth town
    Way down there by Mexico
The women are loose and the booze is cheap
So if you need good lovin’ then you know you gotta stay
    Fly high Duluth!

[spoken]: I am Wally Hammerlich, and this is my she-tiger, mate for life, Shar

    Fly high Duluth!

Feel that achin’ and a breakin’ in my old dungarees
For a big legged woman named Sally Sleazy Skeezer
She only need one look at my old trouser weasel
And I throw myself down on her sweet cherryloo
    Whoooooo…
    Fly high Duluth!

[spoken]: Uh oh, I see my main man Stack Sanchez a comin’ my way, and I think his axe has something to say about this!

    [guitar solo]

[spoken] Let’s bring it way down guys, bring it way down

    Shhhhhhhh…

Now let me kick it out to you people like this
See, we got a lot of crazy stuff going on in this country today
We’re out there dying in the streets every day
    You dig?
    Hit me!

    Go Thunderbird Spirit!
I see Old Glory a wavin’ on the horizon
I see the tattered standard of an invading army
    And their numbers are legion
    Hit me two times!

Mama! Don’t you point that gun at me
I said please mama! Don’t you point that gun at me
    Because my love
    Is consecrated
In the blood of the Apache nations
    Oh Duluth, yeah!

Now wrap your head around this

    [drum solo]

Everyone give it up for my man Freddie Fingers on the thunder machine!

    Yeah!
    Fly high Duluth
    Fly high Duluth
    Fly high Duluth
    Fly high Duluth
    Everybody!
    Fly high Duluth
    Fly high Duluth
    I can’t year you!
    Fly high Duluth
    Fly high Duluth
Oh sweet Lordy, tell me what we’re doing now

    Yeah I can feel it
Way down in my loins, my loins, my loins, my loins, my loins, yeah

    Fly!
    High!
    Du!
    Luth!

    Fly high Duluth!

Bill Hader was in the back, the singer was, as Hesme said, Will Forte, Horatio Sans was on bass, and the guest host was Scarlett Johansson.

That’s Scarlett Johannson as the female singer. She was the guest host that night. Will Forte, who’s still on the show, is the lead singer.

Paula Pell is the show’s head writer and I believe she had a hand in this sketch. She has a connection to the area thru her cousin, Debbi Kazynski.

  16. Danny G Danny G on November 19, 2009 at 8:26 am

That was Scarlett Johannson as the “she-tiger mate-for-life”.

  17. Marin Christensen Marin Christensen on November 19, 2009 at 8:32 am

Thanks for the insight, Rubber Chicken. I was pretty curious as to why they chose Duluth. I figured there must be a story behind it.

  18. Rubber Chicken Rubber Chicken on November 19, 2009 at 8:38 am

Paula is really cool. She got us stuff for a fundraiser once. She also worked my name into a Debbie Downer sketch a few years back, which was outstanding.

And Debbie has appeared in the background of quite a few SNL sketches, back when she lived in NYC. Her mom would always email me or call and let me know. “Debbie is on tonight…unless her sketch gets cut after dress!”

I also know a writer at SNL. He’s from Owatonna. Minnesotans rule at SNL!

Rubber Chicken, which “Debbie Downer” skit are you referring to? I’d like to see that one!

  22. Rubber Chicken Rubber Chicken on November 19, 2009 at 2:53 pm

    Notorious M.R.P.,

It’s the one where my family reunion is at Disneyland. Lindsay Lohan was the guest host. Jimmy Fallon and Horatio Sanz couldn’t stop laughing at Rachel Dratch. It’s pretty funny, in a Harvey Korman/Tim Conway sorta way.

How did they know to make the band look just like Bone Appetite?

  24. Mary Mary on November 20, 2009 at 8:07 am

Awesome! I can’t believe the Northland’s NewsCenter hasn’t adopted this as their theme music yet.

I had SNL on the night this originally aired–I think it was the last skit of the night, and it’s the rare last-SNL-skit-of-the-night that manages to go completely off the rails without completely bombing. Bill Hader is hilarious in this.

Speaking of SNL. DMB is on SNL this week. I suppose I need to tie DMB to PDD somehow to make this comment meaningful… Well Dave wrote “Don’t Drink the Water” while camping on the Northcoast of Big Sexy (Lake Superior)..

This was the original. I believe due to the audio outage early on the rehearsal was used in the repeat broadcast, and didn’t quite measure up to this. This is the great one.
