I assume you mean “professional watchdog journalism” and “stories and conversations added to the community site by citizens” to be two separate, but perhaps sometimes overlapping, things?

Most definitely separate.
We’ve had 12 ex-DNT and other journalists involved (at varying levels) since May developing the organization.
Professional journalists will be paid for their contributions and given priority/freedom to write whatever they want.
Community contributions will be given weight as supplemental content/commentary but certainly not pushed aside.
Anyone who has something intelligent to say that goes through citizen journo training courses and can back up the story with credible sources (checked by the staff) will have the same exposure as staff writers.
The above vision will clearly take a lot of work on our part but we’re dedicated to delivering it if funding comes through.

Do I have to be from Duluth to join? I’m a Superior resident, but as a former employee of local news orgs I’m very interested in this.
This sounds really great, like MinnPost.com. As our local newspaper deteriorates more and more and eventually sinks into oblivion, it’s imperative that we have professional journalists still covering our community. I already signed up. The similarity of the DC’s name with the DCB does concern me though. I would not want anyone to mistake that insanity with this legitimate new endeavor. But then the DCB has been imploding since the primary, with lots of made-up comments, obviously altered comments, and just plain offensive comments entertaining the rubberneckers. Hopefully it’ll just be a bad memory after the election. . .

1) How will you distinguish who are the “professional” journalists who get paid for their submissions?
2) What “citizen journo training courses” are you referring to and will you be offering them, and if so how do I sign up?

I’m optimistic.
A half-dozen committed reporters attending every board meeting in town could find enough news to kick the DNT’s butt on a daily basis. I go to 2 board meetings a month (GLA and Spirit Mountain) and I almost always find a story. The vast majority of news in Duluth is simply not covered.
