Does anyone know what’s the deal with the cave (with double doors) just off the road down from the corner of Arrowhead and Rice Lake Road (toward Lowell School)?

I think it was a root cellar for the old county poor house. Much of the food was grown on site. Also hundreds of unmarked graves in that area. Rumored to be haunted by restless ghosts.
Wonder if anyone would be interested in a community root cellar?
My grandparents did a brief stint in the poor house and told me that was indeed the root cellar.
my parents OWNED the poor house & that’s where they kept the $$$.

I just visited Greenwood Cemetery a month ago, I didn’t know about it & a friend took me there. Unfortunately it was still under a foot of snow. I’ll have to go back again. Besides the mass grave plaque there were two flags sticking out of the ground like real graves, one was the Finnish flag and the other I can’t remember, or maybe it was just a white cross, but I thought that pretty odd, are there modern graves/people buried there? Anyway, pretty interesting.
I have a community garden plot nearby and have often wondered what that was. I too though it was an old root cellar. Last week the doors were open and it seems that stuff was being hauling in or out, so now I’m really curious about its present use.
Were’s the old graveyard? Not under my tomatoes I hope? Or maybe that’s why they grow so well?

It seems like a couple times a year that old root cellar is open and there are people going in and out. I have never known what they were up to… but my guess had been that it was perhaps being used by the community garden folks, what with the gardens being nearby and all. But if the single-t variation of me has a garden there and doesn’t know about it, I guess my theory is out the window.

I know where it is, but I can’t really explain it. I’ll try. From Arrowhead Rd turn left onto Rice Lake Rd. Park in the Baptist church parking lot, then walk toward the road. When you get to Rice Lake, turn left and follow the road down not too far, then to your left you will see a trail…I think it had a vehicle-blocker. Just follow that trail in until you come to a large clearing. There’s a foundation there, and a big plaque in the middle that tells you about the cemetary. It’s pretty anti-climatic, but neat nonetheless.
PS, the photo you posted is what the foundation is from. So there’s your address, 2501 Rice Lake Road.

Hi Mel- Came across your post of visiting Greenwood Cemetery. I am thinking of working with area churches on restoration of this site. Let me know if you or others would be interested in this idea. -Scott

I am retired from the Chris Jensen Nursing Home. On my lunch breaks I would often take the trail located behind the east wing of the building. The trail leads to an overlook of the area containing the graves. One can walk downward from there and exit onto Rice Lake Rd. During the years I worked at Chris Jensen I often heard, from elderly people, that those who died at the poor house and had no family would be buried there. Also learned that the mound across from Chris Jenson was indeed a root celler. By the way, the trail behind the building is well kept and makes for a wonderful hike.
