With three newly-commissioned song cycles by Asian American composers Justine F. Chen, Melissa Dunphy and Kamala Sankaram, this recital asserts the Asian American experience from the perspective of those who have lived it. As contrasted with Maurice Ravel’s Asie, a prime example of European musical Orientalism, these new songs describe the joys, pains, contradictions and pride experienced by Asians living in America. The College of St. Scholastica String Orchestra and pianists Jessica Schroeder and Emily Valine perform Sergei Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, with narration by Kevin Quarmby. The event is part of a relaxed, family-friendly and sensory-friendly concert series for all ages, presented by the college's music program. General admission is $7; free for kids and students and for Sisters of the St. Scholastica Monastery.
