Fifty years ago — Aug. 9, 1965 — the DNT reports there will be a groundbreaking ceremony the next day for a new $1.4-million Duluth YMCA.
Fred Wylie, YMCA general secretary, said construction will begin immediately following the ground breaking ceremonies. The building is scheduled to be completed in a year, he said.
So far, more than $1.2 million has been contributed to the building fund. Wylie said that more contributions are expected during actual construction.
Ceremony participants include the Most Rev. Francis J Schenk, bishop of Duluth; W. S. Moore, YMCA building fund chairman; Marshall Reinig, Chamber of Commerce president; Mayor George D. Johnson; Rev. C. J. Tellekson, pastor of the First Lutheran Church; L. M. Hatlestad, YMCA building chairman; Rabbi Jacob Traub, Adas Israel Congregation, and Wylie. R. H. Niemeyer, YMCA president, will officiate at the ground breaking.
A. Hedenberg & Co. are general contractors for the building, while A. W. Kuettel & Sons are mechanical contractors and the Universal Electric Co., electrical work.
Melander-Fugelso & Associates are architects for the building and consulting service is provided by the YMCA National Building and Furnishing Service.
