City’s 58th Street Diner is bringing the 1950s back to South Superior. With its classic malt-shop feel and reasonable prices, it’s like taking a step back in time.
Located on 58th Street and Tower Avenue, the diner serves breakfast classics and other traditional diner fare such as the burger tray. Broasted chicken is served daily, with meals ranging from two pieces of chicken to 20. On Friday and Saturday nights the diner serves dinner, with a fish fry on Friday featuring a choice of walleye or all-you-can-eat Pollock, and rotating specials on Saturdays.
Why the 1950’s feel? Owner Cory Mohelski says the theme just fit in with the address.
“I wanted to have a little bit of fun,” Mohelski said. “I like the style and wanted to bring something to the area.”
The menu features omelets such as the Chevy, Dodge and GMC and sandwiches named after musical artists including the “Patsy Cline” patty melt and “Johnny Cash” pulled pork sandwich. Mohelski credits that to his passion for cars and music.
As for the name, diners can thank smartphone technology for that.
“When you type ‘Cory’ into a smartphone it will autocorrect it to ‘city’.” Mohelski said. “Friends have been calling me that for two years.”
The top seller at City’s is the burger tray, featuring a ’50’s style build-a-burger, fries, slaw and your choice of a homemade malt or bottled pop, all for $6.58.
City’s 58th Street Diner is open Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m and Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
