Perfect Duluth Day is looking for a new curator for its ongoing Selective Focus feature. Applications are being accepted through May 9.
Curator sounds artsier than coordinator, right? And it’s not really a writing thing, is it? Well, maybe it’s a bit of all three.
Brian Barber has been curating Perfect Duluth Day’s Selective Focus posts for five years and is ready to give someone else a shot. Tim White did the honors before Brian; the feature has been around since 2014.
Basically, the job involves “curating” roughly 50 articles per year. A little writing is involved, but mostly it’s about showing off visual arts through assembling a variety of images. Usually the writing part is just a short introduction and sometimes a few interview questions. Selective Focus has taken on a few different formats over the years, such as:
- Curated photos on a theme … like trees.
- Question-and-answer interviews with artists … like Marissa Saurer.
- Collections of Instagram pics on a topic … like Thanksgiving Weekend Snowout 2019.
- And the occasional oddball thing … like when we put a Bernie on it.
Browse the archive to get the feel. The new person is free to spin things in a new direction, stick with the old ways or mix it up.
So, it’s a job?
It’s a work-from-home independent contractor position, but might be considered fun enough to not attach the word job to. It maybe averages two hours of work a week. Some pieces are super easy to assemble; others more complex.
