Perfect Duluth Day

Postcard from West Superior Street in 1908

This postcard depicts a scene looking east from the 500 block of West Superior Street, where the Radisson Hotel and Duluth Public Library stand today. It was mailed 110 years ago — Aug. 29, 1908.

The modern-day view of the location shown in the postcard is marred by Superior Street roadwork, but wouldn’t look at all similar to the 1908 shot in any circumstance.

The back of the postcard offers these notes on Superior Street:

The cosmopolitan features and varied industries of Duluth give its thoroughfares a distinctiveness almost peculiar to the city. Superior Street, especially the view looking eastward and showing the noteworthy Spalding Hotel and the Lyceum Theatre, is a fine type of the more important arteries of this youthful and energetic city.

A different version of the same postcard was previously featured in the PDD post “Superior Street and its cosmopolitan features.”
