Construction is ready to begin at Irving Park in West Duluth. A news release from the city’s Parks and Recreation division specifies May 7 as the date KTM Paving, Inc. will launch the first phase of a $1.1-million revitalization plan.
Irving Park was damaged following the Historic Solstice Flood Disaster of 2012. Community club and neighborhood volunteers assisted with cleaning the site and participated in a process to develop a mini-master plan. Irving community members have also helped raise funds to support the revitalization of the park.
The project’s scope includes:
- New accessible walkways throughout the park
- Porta-potty slab and screen
- New stairs to the parking lot
- Removal of old playground and installation of new in June 2018
- Relocation of the basketball court
- Site lighting
- Plaza gathering space adjacent to the garage/concession building
The park will be closed except for scheduled field and pathway uses during the duration of the construction. Residents can expect to see 5-10 workers at any time at the park from May 7 to July 30. There will also be truck traffic in the construction area and increased noise. A project update will be provided at the Irving Community Club meeting on May 22 at 6 p.m. at City Center West, 5830 Grand Ave.
