Moose Lake Brewing Company started selling 24 oz. crowlers this week. For those unfamiliar with the term, a crowler is an oversized can, which is filled on site, much like a growler.
This newish format of beer distribution is becoming popular because cans are more durable than glass growlers and keep beer fresh for as long as a month. They’re not reusable but they’re recyclable.
The brewery in Moose Lake, about 45 miles southwest of Duluth, has been operating under the radar for a few months. Even without advertising, brewer and co-owner Shawn Wigg says keeping up with demand has been a challenge. At the moment, the brewery has an IPA on tap as well as a blonde and pale ale. The latter two are brewed with a technique designed to impart smoky flavors.
A grand opening is planned for Oct. 22. Wigg emphasizes it will be a low-key event. A food truck might be enlisted but it won’t be a big production. “We’re not trying to be something we’re not. We’re just a small-town brewery — a fun place to come, socialize and enjoy a beer by the lake,” he says.
