Perfect Duluth Day

Duluth Central High School 1975 Concert LP with Clark Terry

I picked up a box of LPs at a local estate sale a couple years ago. I was just going through them more closely and thought I would share this one. It’s a concert recording of the Central High School Jazz Ensemble with jazz great Clark Terry, recorded at Central High Auditorium on March 13, 1975.

Inside the record sleeve was a concert program. I noted that Michael Baker, who receives several solos on the record, was one of the young percussionists on the album. Mike became a successful session drummer and was musical director for Whitney Houston for a time.

Clark Terry played with Thelonious Monk, among others.  I suspect this was a big deal for the students: playing with Clark Terry and getting a live album cut and pressed.  Cool to know at least one of these young musicians went on to pursue a career in music.

Any thoughts or recollections of this show, Central High Jazz Ensemble, or Mike Baker?
