The Duluth Art Institute has announced the location of its new gallery space. After 50 years at the St. Louis County Depot, the region’s foremost public art venue will move its galleries to the fourth floor of the U.S. Bank Building at 130 W. Superior St.
The move affects the DAI’s exhibitions only. The institute’s youth and adult classes, ceramics studios and artists studio spaces will remain at its Lincoln Park facility in the historic Carnegie Library building at 2229 W. Second St., which the DAI owns.
The U.S. Bank building is owned by 130 W. Superior Street, LLC, which purchased the high-rise office building from its namesake bank in 2021.
The DAI’s move follows a 2023 decision by the St. Louis County Board to reject the DAI’s proposal to remain in the Depot space.
Concurrent with the gallery move, the DAI is pursuing a bonding request from the Minnesota Legislature to fund expansion and renovation to its Lincoln Park building, and possibly acquiring new property for its growing activities. The request could eventually result in a permanent home for all DAI exhibits and activities.
