Russell Prather’s “Rope,” a hanging piece made with acrylic on layers of polyester film, took the $1,000 first-place prize at the Duluth Art Institute’s 61st Arrowhead Regional Biennial last week. Prather is a professor at Northern Michigan University who teaches British literary and visual culture of the 18th through 20th centuries.
Juror Dyani White Hawk selected three artists from the biennial exhibit to receive awards and cash prizes. Five honorable mentions were also selected.
The second-place prize, in the amount of $500, was awarded to Keren Kroul’s “Lingering Reflection,” a large-scale, multi-paneled watercolor on paper. The $250 third-place prize was awarded to Kathy McTavish’s “B r 1 n k ::: s t 1 t ch,” an installation of two wall-mounted chrome books.
Honorable mentions were:

- Shawna Gilmore’s “Watering the Wallpaper”
- Laura Andrews’ “It’s Just Grams”
- Leah Yellowbird’s “Otters”
- Becca Mulenburg’s “Apples for June”
The 61st Arrowhead Regional Biennial remains on display through Feb. 9.
