Perfect Duluth Day

Books Needed for Children’s Book Drive

Have you been doing some spring cleaning and noticed that you have a lot of children’s books your kids have grown out of?  If so, please consider donating them to United Way of Greater Duluth’s Big Red Bookshelf.  Or, consider donating because you believe in the importance of early interactions with books, stories and reading  for all young children.

From June 14 – June 21 children’s books will be collected at all the Duluth Super One Foods, the United Way office, the Duluth Teachers Credit Unions, the Bookstore at Fitger’s, Minnesota Power Employee’s Credit Union and Shear Hair Magic salon in Hermantown.

The Big Red Bookshelves are located at the CHUM family shelter, Safe Haven Shelter, the Essentia Children’s Emergency Department, St. Luke’s Pediatrics, the Duluth Women Infants and Children (WIC) office, the Duluth Grill, Lake Superior Community Health Center Dental Clinic and the Second Harvest Food Shelf.

In less than 3 years over 21,000 children’s books have been distributed to our area’s youngest children through the Big Red Bookshelf!  The children who visit these shelves get to take the books home and keep.   We aim for new or gently-used books appropriate for children birth to eight years old and do not accept religious or holiday-themed books or books that promote a bias.  We are especially in need of board books for infants and toddlers.

This is a community effort to improve the lives of young children in our area.  By providing free books to families in need parents and children have the opportunity to bond over the time spent sharing a story.  We encourage all community members to participate.  Call 218-726-4770 for more information.  You can also visit us on Facebook at “Success By 6 Duluth.”

Thanks to the Duluth Women’s Leadership Council for sponsoring this book drive.
