SPECIAL REPORT UPDATE: Mayor’s Lawn Looks Fabulous!
Crazy Surfing Weather
This isn't the only formula for making a good PDD post, but it's my personal favorite.
Things that make PDD posts good:
- Links
- Notices of upcoming events
- Questions asked of the community
Ways to make your post stupid:
- Steal photos/jokes from other websites.
- Post YouTube videos without commentary.
- Repost MySpace bulletins.
What I like to remember is that if it takes no effort for you to make a post, chances are, no one wants to read it.

Can I just add:
"Your photo sized to 500 pixels or less in width."
As long as we're trotting out our pet peeves.

I'm going to copy/paste the [insert your religious tome of choice here] and hope this comes true.

WORST POST EVAR!!! ; ) Isn't this just a repost from something on Mybook? ; ) Can my tongue get any farther into my cheek? ; )

Can I just say as a relative newcomer I really enjoyed reading those "good example" posts that you offered, a few of which I had missed. Any chance we can get some voted for super duper good posts from other veterans. Also, I am not sure if you like this or not, but I like it when people get talking (politely) about real, but nuanced and complex issues like the recent dealie on the article from Barb Olsen/the reader about the lakewalk and school expansion. Are those considered good, or not?

Starfire did a best of 2007 back on Dec. 31, and Tamara included her picks in the comments.
I agree, jp...it would be fun to see others' lists, too.

Is the dictum in respect to the (now gone) squirrel photo? Cuz that was golden, even if it wasn't from Duluth!

1) It's not a dictum, just my personal preferences.
2) Golden would have been attributing the person who took the photo, and not assuming credit for it.

This is something I have been saying for years. 'Think before you blog,' I have always said. Of course, I say it with such panache.

I read PDD almost daily. I have not posted for some time but enjoy reading the posts, opening the links, and seeing the pictures.
When it stops being interesting and fun is when people use it as a sounding board to bitch and whine without being informed - I could go to other local blogs for that - or read the "Talk about it" in the DNT (website).
That being said, I have noticed a turn in the PDD climate that last few months. More and more postings without thought or explanation.
Thanks Barrett for taking the time to wrangle in your site and to continue to provide some credibility.

All this over the GI Joes and the dead squirrel?
Why not just add the attribution below and be done with it, rather than yanking the post down.
I get that the site is primarily Duluth based, but it seems that those who are 'in the club' can post any random thing they want, and others' posts are more scrupulously supervised. JMHO.
Anyway, love the site and appreciate Barrett & Co's hard work!

GFNC, I think its more than just the GI joe post. I believe this all started a couple of years ago when YouTube got popular. People would randomly find funny stuff and cross-post it here. I don't think this site should be a YouTube filter. I also disagree with the "club" assessment, and local relevance. Just post good material whether its personal, local, national, global, whatever. A good post is hard to define, but personally, I would prefer that this site not be used to merely pass on material from other sites without a "reason" (again hard to define) to do so. For example, the Gary Gygax YouTube stuff had some relevance due to its timeliness in the news, and could sort of be tied into geek prom. IMHO.

p.s. I think this is a valid discussion for this site, and no one should take it personally. I've had some pretty whack posts over the years as well.

Girl: I didn't yank the post down. The person who posted it took it down.
Berv: Amen. You said it much better than I did.

Berv and Barrett, you are both absolved. Go forth and have a fruitful weekend!
