World Accordion Day: Stas Venglevski
A World of Accordions Museum celebrates World Accordion Day during this event. AWAM Artistic Director Stas Venglevski premieres his “Full Moon Suite,” composed for Joan Cochran Sommers, UMKC Professor Emerita. Cochran Sommers will perform in duet with Venglevski and in trio with accordionists Betty Jo Simon and Jane Christison. Dr. Willard A. Palmer will discuss the era in which accordions evolved and the Contino connection that inspired the Palmer-Hughes Accordion Method books. The event includes performances by Dance Attic, Joanna Darrow, Dee Langley and Paul Vargason. Midsummer Serenade
The Windsummer Ensemble -- featuring musicians from the DSSO, Mesabi Symphony and Northshore Philharmonic -- performs. Featured works include Dvorak’s Serenade for Winds, Op. 44, Mozart’s Wind Serenade in C Minor and the Wind Octet of Haydn. In Concert: Stas Venglevski, Derek Bromme and Brett Jones
Three musicians will perform in concert: Stas Venglevski on accordion, Derek Bromme on tuba and Brett Jones on percussion. The hour-long program includes the world premiere of “Footprints” by Mayako Kubo, written for accordion solo and dedicated to Stas Venglevski; “Witch of November” by Ian Deterling for tuba and marimba; and music by Johann Sebastian Bach, William Susman, Astor Piazzolla, Nikita Mndoyants and Stas Venglevski. An Evening with Anthony Bukoski
Local author Anthony Bukoski reads from his books, including his newly published "Blondes of Wisconsin" at the Hanni Strahl Concert Hall, in the A World of Accordions Museum. Find out more »Ameriikan Poijat Up North Finnish Evening Concert
The Finnish American brass band Ameriikan Poijat (Boys of America) will perform a benefit fundraiser concert for the Finlandia Foundation Northland. The band has traveled widely, with performances in most Midwestern states, Pennsylvania, Colorado, Canada and Finland. The band has released six CD recordings and published some of its performance sheet music. The program will consist of a mixture of concert and dance music.
