John Steffl Gallery. All ages. Learn to sculpt headwraps with exhibiting artist Chesley Antoinette. Each workshop participant receives a scarf to sculpt and embellish, inspired by the collection of headwraps on view in Antoinette's show Tignon. As participants incorporate their personal style, they will learn the history of the 1786 Tignon Law and uncover how the headwrap became a symbol of rebellion in Louisiana -- subverting intentional oppression by enhancing beauty, intelligence and adaptability. The Banyan Tree: Storytelling Workshop with Artist Roshan Ganu
Multimedia artist Roshan Ganu invites the public to take part in a community art project in which photography, videography and the written words of participants create the stories told around the Banyan Tree. The Banyan Tree, a 6-by-5-foot sculpture installed in the Steffl Gallery at the Duluth Art Institute, becomes a gathering space for people to connect and share stories around a theme. Susan Hensel: Bending Toward Beauty
With limited color palettes and basic techniques, Minnesota artist Susan Hensel creates textile sculptures and mixed media works. Spanning a wide range of sizes, Hensel investigates various forms: folded embroidery, movable vessels, free-standing sculptures, and large-scale wall installations. Each piece celebrates the physics of light and encourages viewers to move through the gallery to witness colors mix, vibrate, and interact. The exhibit opens on Dec. 19 and the Art Night Out Talk & Reception is on Jan. 12.

DAI Annual Member Show Reception & Spectrum/Ovation TV Award Ceremony
One evening with two celebrations will mark a prolific year of work by Duluth Art Institute member artists and a $10,000 award granted by Spectrum and Ovation TV. The DAI was one of 16 arts nonprofits nationwide honored by Spectrum and Ovation for its focus on justice. After the award ceremony, the Great Hall will open for viewing the Annual Member Show.

I’ll Make An Exception: A Performing Arts Collection
On Friday, June 30th, an evening occurs of new and innovative choreographic works from local and national dance and performance artists. This unique event is community-driven and not-for-profit. Finally Fridays at Duluth Art Institute
The Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Finally Fridays event offers coffee and business networking. At this edition, hear from Duluth Art Institute Executive Director Christina Woods about the work of the DAI at the last Finally Fridays of 2023. In lieu of a registration fee, the Duluth Chamber team will collect cash donations at the door that will go directly to support the work of the Duluth Art Institute.
