Event Navigation

From June 7-9, Minnesotans do not need a fishing license while taking someone age 15 or younger fishing. Take a Kid Fishing Weekend is an annual free opportunity to introduce young people to one of the state’s favorite activities.

Children age 15 and younger do not require fishing licenses at any time of the year, though they must observe all fishing seasons and other regulations.

The DNR’s Take a Kid Fishing Weekend page includes links to a beginner’s guide to fishing. The Minnesota DNR’s Learn to Fish page covers fishing basics, where to fish, how to catch different types of fish, and the importance of fishing ethics and being stewards of Minnesota’s natural resources.

Fishing gear is available to borrow at state parks and the DNR’s I Can Fish! program teaches the basics of fishing and runs throughout the summer at state parks. Even when it’s not Take a Kid Fishing Weekend, Minnesota residents generally can fish in state parks without a fishing license if the body of water doesn’t require a trout stamp.
