Pepperkakebyen: Gingerbread City Duluth 2021
Duluth’s 10th annual Norwegian Gingerbread Village is a collaborative effort of the Nordic Center and Nortun Lodge 1-016 Sons of Norway. People of all ages are welcome to view this presentation of gingerbread house masterpieces through the Nordic Center’s window through Dec. 19.
The event can be experienced online or outside the Nordic Center. Beginning on the night of the Christmas City of the North Parade, the Nordic Center’s Lake Avenue windows will be a spectacle of gingerbread structures for passerbys to enjoy. The experience will also be available on the Nordic Center website as well as on Facebook and Instagram.
Although current health concerns will keep the Nordic Center’s doors closed for the event, the “city” is expanding in other ways. Several downtown organizations and businesses are joining in to help grow the gingerbread city. A map of all the locations featuring gingerbread displays in their windows can be found posted at the Nordic Center to guide participants on a festive walking tour of Downtown Duluth.
Community members who wish to participate by adding to the visual spectacle of the event are encouraged to visit the Nordic Center website to pre-order gingerbread kits, available at $25 each. Along with the kit, patrons will be invited to a virtual gingerbread workshop taking place on Saturday, Nov. 13 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Deadline for gingerbread kit orders is Oct. 31. Completed gingerbread structures may be dropped off at the Nordic Center to be displayed as part of the community Pepperkakebyen.
The Nordic Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sharing Nordic culture with the greater community through social, educational and arts programs.
