John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon 2019
The 35th running of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is a 300-mile race that begins at Billy’s Bar in Rice Lake Township and ends at Grand Portage Lodge and Casino. Festivities start at 10 a.m., when fans are given the chance to meet the mushers and their dog teams, purchase official race merchandise, purchase food and take in the race atmosphere.
Race Day Events

10 a.m. – Food and drink vendors open
Noon – Races begin
3 p.m. – Live music at Billy’s
The Beargrease is the longest sled-dog race in the lower 48 and is a qualifier for the famed “Iditarod” in Alaska. More than a dozen world-class mushers compete in the full distance marathon.
The mid-distance race, now called the Beargrease 120, starts at Billy’s Bar and ends at Lutsen Mountains Resort. The Beargrease 120 is the most popular and competitive mid-distance sled dog race in North America.
The recreational-class race, now called the Beargrease 40, starts at Billy’s Bar and ends at the Highway 2 Gravel Pit in Two Harbors.
Race weekend also features Vet Checks and Opening Ceremonies at Lake Superior College, the Cutest Puppy Contest at Fitger’s and more.
