JAM Concert Series: Christian Moreno Cova Collective

Apr 15, 2023, 7:00 pm

Event Navigation

Pianist, composer, and bandleader Christian Moreno Cova is a rising force in Minnesota’s jazz scene. Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Moreno Cova has received praise for his innovative compositions and arrangements that unify a diverse set of influences from Venezuelan traditional to contemporary jazz. Along with leading his own group made up of some of Minnesota’s best young jazz musicians, Moreno Cova often performs as a sideman in the Twin Cities and Duluth jazz scenes. Moreno Cova holds a degree in Jazz Studies from UMD where he studied with Ryan Frane.

The collective will be Joined by Esko High School Jazz Band and Post-Haste.

Post-Haste is the product of the 2021 Denfeld Highschool Jazz Band rhythm section, comprised of Haven Andersen on keys, Chase Andersen on guitar, Tommy Kishida on drums, and Taylor Shykes on bass. Influenced by various different groups such as A Tribe Called Quest, Vulfpeck, and Indigo Jam Unit, Post-Haste has some tasty jams cooking that should not be missed.

The JAM Concert Series is held during the month of April because April is Jazz Appreciation Month. Concerts are held twice a week at various venues around Duluth. One concert features a small jazz ensemble that will play a 50 min set and then a jam session commences where everyone is invited to play, especially students. The other concert consists of a local high school’s big band, followed by either a collegiate big band or a jazz combo, and then the night concludes with a local professional Big Band.
