SUMMARY:History in a Pint: Bicentennial Boom
DESCRIPTION:Veterans Memorial Hall\, a program of the St. Louis County Historical Society\, is presenting a special three-part series of its History in a Pint program. The theme — “A Summer of Storytelling” — blends local triumph\, humorous misadventures and poignant wartime reflections. \nThe third installment is “Bicentennial Boom\,” or\, “Charting a New Course: How Duluth Harnessed the ‘Spirit of ’76.’” \nWhile Duluth’s economic struggles of the early 1970s are well-documented\, its incredible Bicentennial boom is a story waiting to be told. In 1975 and 1976\, dozens of diverse ethnic festivals celebrated the region’s heritage\, sparking major community improvements — including the renovation of the St. Louis County Depot. Duluth civic and commercial leaders jumped on the bandwagon early\, making Duluth the very first official Bicentennial Community in Minnesota. \nDr. Thomas Saylor\, professor of history emeritus at Concordia University\, St. Paul\, is the presenter. He is an accomplished author for the Minnesota Historical Society and is penning a commissioned series on the 1976 American Bicentennial. His presentation explores how local leaders embraced the cultural milestone of the Bicentennial to spark lasting regional success. \nThe storytelling session includes a Q&A. A cash bar is open during the event. \nParking is available at the back of the St. Louis County Depot complex. Follow signage to the North Shore Scenic Railway entry; parking lot is accessible below Michigan Street via Fourth Avenue West. Enter the building at the North Shore Scenic Railroad entry.
