Simply Superior: 50th Anniversary of Apostle Islands
Simply Superior is a news and public affairs program focused on events and issues in northwestern Wisconsin, hosted by Robin Washington.
The Apostle Islands was designated a national park in 1970. In celebration of the 50th anniversary, Simply Superior has excerpts from a virtual symposium about the rich history, vast resources and diverse ecology of the islands. Washington will share recordings from the array of presenters, who covered everything from the survival of the islands’ celebrated bird species, the piping plover, to environmental education of fourth-graders and the underwater mountainous terrain beneath the big lake’s surface.
Also on this week’s show, poems about the Apostle Islands read by Bayfield’s Poet Laureate Lucy Tyrell and other poets.
Rounding out the show is a look back at the week’s news highlights. Washington is joined by WPR reporter Danielle Kaeding and the Star Tribune’s Brooks Johnson for a review of the biggest news moments of the past week.
Simply Superior airs each Friday at 10 a.m. on 91.3 FM KUWS Radio in Superior and 90.9 FM WUWS in Ashland. It also airs at 7 p.m. on 88.9 FM in Brule, 104.7 FM in Washburn, and 88.5 FM in Superior. Archives are available at wpr.org.
