The Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve was established in 1972. That was the first year of full-time standardized fall raptor migration count and raptor banding research. Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory, a nonprofit and management entity of the nature reserve, is holding the 50th anniversary event and festival to support the Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve and the bird conservation efforts there today and in the future.

Other Important Information

Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve is an outdoor facility without a building. Portable toilets are available. Accessible parking and drop-off is available near the main overlook. Other parking is along the roadside. Water, soda and light snacks are available for purchase in the merchandise trailer. There are many restaurants within a 5-10 minute drive of Hawk Ridge. Attendees can bring a cooler with food and non-alcoholic drinks. To view, the migration comfortably bring a chair, binoculars and dress in layers for the weather.

The Hawk Ridge Nature Reserve is one of North America’s best places to experience the spectacle of the fall raptor migration. Migrating birds, including raptors and passerines, concentrate in impressive numbers at the western tip of Lake Superior. Some travel from as far away as the Arctic and pass through Duluth on their way to their wintering areas to the south. Migrants funnel down the North Shore along the ridges that overlook the city.
