Fitger’s 5K Run & Walk 2020

Sat, Sep 12, 6:00 am to 12:00 pm | $35 – $40 | Fitger’s Brewery Complex

Event Navigation

The 31st annual Fitger’s 5K Run & Walk begins at the Fitger’s Brewery Complex and heads east for an out-and-back route featuring London Road and lake views on South Street. The course is a USATF-certified, chip-timed course.

The entry fee is $35 in advance, $40 on race day, and $10 for children ages 6 to 14. Net proceeds benefit the Young Athletes Foundation, a Grandma’s Marathon program that focuses on the promotion and development of youth athletics throughout Carlton, Cook, Douglas, Lake and St. Louis Counties.

To sign up, runners and walkers should log on to grandmasmarathon.com. The Fitger’s 5K registration process is conducted exclusively online.

This is the second race in the KP Challenge, named after the late Kevin Peterson. Participants commit to run three Grandma’s Marathon races, including the Saint Fennessy, Fitger’s 5K and Park Point 5-Miler. The challenge is designed to keep participants on a regular running schedule that supports the successful completion of longer distances.

The race will affect traffic on Superior Street, London Road, South Street and 21st Avenue East. Most of the race course will consist of a coned lane on the side of the road or be on the Lakewalk. Motorists should be aware, however, of the following closures and traffic changes.

Starting at 5 a.m., 21st Avenue East, between London Road and Water Street, will be reduced to one lane of traffic. Only local traffic will be allowed access to Water Street from London Road. Officers will be posted to direct traffic in the area. Both I-35 ramps at 21st Avenue East will be closed. Northbound I-35 traffic will be diverted to 26th Avenue East, and motorists wanting to enter southbound I-35 can do so at 26th Avenue East.

Starting at 5:30 a.m., South Street, from 15th Avenue East to 20th Avenue East; and 15th Avenue East, between South Street and London Road, will be reduced to single, one-way driving lanes. All traffic must travel only westbound on South Street and only northbound on 14th Avenue East during the race. Other avenues in the area will remain open to allow access to South Street.

Also at 5:30 a.m., London Road from 10th to 12th avenues east will close to traffic.

Traffic on Superior Street from the Fitger’s Brewing Complex at 600 E. Superior St. to 10th Avenue East will be directed through coned driving lanes, with a runner’s lane coned along the lake-side of the road. Motorists should drive through this section of Superior Street slowly and with caution.

Roads will re-open and traffic flow will return to normal by approximately 12:15 p.m.

Motorists should be aware of temporary “No Parking” areas on Superior Street, London Road, 15th Avenue East, 20th Avenue East, and South Street. Violators will be tagged and towed. Parking will be allowed on the north (odd) side of South Street and of London Road in the race area.

This year’s race has been modified to reduce the size of groups gathered together, in accordance with guidelines from the State of Minnesota. Participants will run in waves of no more than 25 people at a time throughout the event. The first wave starts at 6:00 a.m. and the last wave starts at 11:30 a.m. The race starts on the east side of Fitger’s, on Superior Street, and will finish on the Lakewalk behind Fitger’s. All runners should be done by 12:45 p.m.

Runners are encouraged to park either in the Fitger’s Parking Ramp or along the streets and avenues above the racecourse.

Motorists should remain alert for officers directing traffic and increased pedestrian traffic in the area.
