Evening of Poetry with Joyce Sutphen, Connie Wanek and Louis Jenkins
Zenith Bookstore presents Joyce Sutphen, Connie Wanek and Louis Jenkins in a triple-header evening of poetry. The three esteemed poets, each with strong connections to Duluth and the region, will discuss their work, read from new collections and sign copies of their books.
Joyce Sutphen, current Minnesota Poet Laureate, will present her new work Carrying Water to the Field.
Connie Wanek has published six books of poems and is the recipient of numerous honors, including the George Morrison Artist of the Year Award in 2009, which recognizes an individual whose body of work has made a significant contribution to the arts in Northeastern Minnesota.
Louis Jenkins will present his new book Where Your House is Now. Jenkins lived in Duluth for 45 years. He has published 10 collections of poetry. He is considered a contemporary master of the prose poem.
Music will be provided by composer/pianist Wendy Durrwachter and vocalist Adam Sippola. Years ago, Louis Jenkins allowed Durrwachter to create centos of his work – she pulled her favorite line out of many of his poems and combined them together to create four new works. She then set them to music for tenor and piano. Sippola and Durrwachter will perform one of her songs with Louis Jenkins’ words called, “Great Cumulous Clouds.” They will also perform songs from her song cycle of W.B. Yeats’ poems.
