Day Out With Thomas is an opportunity for kids to take a ride with their favorite tank engine, meet the railway controller Sir Topham Hatt, have fun in Imagination Station, explore the Lake Superior Railroad Museum, take a ride with Thomas’ friend Percy and more.
The two popular and “very useful engines” from the Island of Sodor will run on the North Shore Scenic Railroad over the first two weekends in August. Excursions take place every hour, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 4-6 and 11-13.
This will be Percy’s first visit to the United States and he and Thomas will be joined by Sir Topham Hatt, the railroad’s controller, and their two drivers. Train rides with both engines, family fun, live music, a magician, face painting, actors, storytelling, crafts, bouncy houses and festival foods are all included along with tours of the Lake Superior Railroad museum.
The Duluth “Day Out With Thomas” event is the fourth-largest in the country and draws visitors from the Midwest and Canada.
The popularity of the #1 Engine stems from a series of books written by the Reverend W. Awdry in the late 1940s and ’50s and made famous on TV and in videos. Those stories are a part of a culture that teaches children lessons through the situations faced by the engines and people on the Island of Sodor.
