Bus Bike Walk 2021: Better Central Entrance
Event Navigation
Zeitgeist and the Duluth-Superior Metropolitan Interstate Council are collaborating to help residents reimagine life on Duluth’s Central Entrance during this Bus, Bike, Walk event, part of a month-long series to celebrate, educate and empower accessible people-powered modes for getting around town. The event location is 3 W. Central Entrance in Duluth.
Central Entrance has historically served automobile through-traffic and drive-by land uses, according to the MIC’s website. This auto-centric infrastructure is aging and deteriorating, and the Minnesota Department of Transportation is planning to fully reconstruct Central Entrance in 2026.
The event is part of the MIC’s planning process to create a shared vision for the corridor with the community. The creative placemaking event will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 4 and 3 to 7 p.m. on Saturday June 5, transforming an empty lot into a festive community atmosphere including local food, a kids play space, a community mural project, pop-up shops and live music along with opportunities for the community to provide input on the redesign for Central Entrance.
Zeitgeist has worked on other creative placemaking initiatives in the past, such as Better Block in 2018, creative crosswalks in 2019 and the Chief Buffalo mural in Gichi-Ode’ Akiing.
A 2012 survey by the MIC reported that 65 percent of respondents ranked the Central Entrance corridor as “bad” or “very bad.” Pedestrian safety was noted as a major concern, which ties the event into Zeitgeist’s annual Bus Bike Walk Month.
Food vendors at the event include Oasis del Norte, Grumpy Goose, Love Creamery and Gumbo Boi. Small business pop-ups include Craftigail, Joya by Hand, On 93rd and Grace, Local Handcrafted Ceramic Art and Hue Apparel. Musicians include Dance Attic, Breanne Marie, Hannah Rey and Hattie Peach.
