A place to enjoy a book and a brew

I am looking for a place in Duluth to read a book and enjoy a beer. Are there any bars/pubs that you recommend which have more of a quiet and calm atmosphere? I enjoy reading at coffee houses, but when it’s the evening I’d much prefer a beer over a coffee or tea.

Minneapolis Star Tribune: Nye’s Polonaise Room to close next year

Nye’s Polonaise Room, a Minneapolis fixture, will close next year, marking the end of an era of polka and piano. Owners of the bar and restaurant, located across the Mississippi River from downtown, told their 35 employees Monday that Nye’s will shut its doors after 65 years in business. Home to the “The World’s Most Dangerous Polka Band,” Nye’s has been a local landmark for decades. In 2006, it was named by Esquire magazine as the best bar in America.

A few recent booze-related news items we’ve been too busy to mention in detail on PDD:

A sign went up last month at 501 E. Fourth St. declaring the former Twins Bar will be reopening as the Break Room.
West Duluth’s venerable North Pole Bar is delinquent on property and sales taxes. It was not open this past Saturday night.
Last Chance Liquor in the Central Hillside will close in the coming months.
Warehouse Liquor on Central Entrance will close and be replaced with a Dunkin’ Donuts.

A Century of the Pickwick

Duluth’s oldest and longest operating restaurant is celebrating its centennial this week. Although it didn’t bear the Pickwick name in 1914, the establishment that would later become the Pickwick Restaurant and Pub opened 100 years ago. The centennial celebration continues through Saturday. See the PDD Calendar for details.

To toss out some random bar gossip, I heard last night that Horseshoe Billiards in the West End closed a while back, and that Burns Bar in Rice Lake Township closed several months ago.

Which reminds me that I don’t think it was ever mentioned on PDD that La Belle in Superior closed earlier this summer. And I heard the roof caved in at the Palace Bar. Is that true? Is it still open?

What will we do without all these classy joints?

Is there a city ordinance that prohibits businesses in the neighborhood around the University of Minnesota Duluth and the College of St. Scholastica from having full liquor licenses? Why is it that the nearest bar to campus is Burrito Union and not something around Woodland or by V.I.P. Pizza? Anyone have any ideas on that?
