DESCRIPTION:This informative talk about salamanders is presented by Spencer Rettler\, Nongame Wildlife Specialist with Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Nongame Wildlife Program. Despite their small stature\, salamanders are heavy lifters in Minnesota’s ecosystems. Not only do they consume high volumes of invertebrates (including Minnesota’s abundant mosquito larvae)\, but they also convey this biomass and energy up the food chain as they become prey for various mammals and birds. Additionally\, salamanders act as indicators of ecosystem health since they are highly sensitive to changes in water quality\, habitat conditions and temperature. Because of this sensitivity\, Minnesota’s salamanders face multiple threats including habitat disturbance/loss\, disease and climate change. \nThis free event requires no registration.

Their many albums have received rave reviews and high praise from the indie rock/americana/jangle-core crowd. \, as always\, the sweet harmonies of Rich Mattson and Germaine Gemberling. \nTheir previous full-length record\, Out There  was released in 2022\, followed by the 2024 single\,Rendezvous With a Star and 3-album set of solo acoustic versions from Mattson\, Spartan Tracks Vol. 1-3.  \nThis performance is on Bent Paddle’s outdoor stage in “The Yard.” If the weather is poor the show moves indoors to the Cosmic Stage.

Space is limited. Registration is required by Sunday\, August 16. \nThe motorcoach will leave the Whole Foods Co-op Denfeld store parking lot promptly at 9 a.m. Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes early to check in. \nThe tour is of working farms\, which include live animals and electric fences. Expect to walk for about 45-60 minutes at a time. Note that the ground may be uneven and/or muddy. Please dress for the weather. All children must be accompanied by an adult. This tour is not a good fit for children younger than 12. Because these are working farms\, service animals are not permitted on this tour. The kneeling motorcoach lowers the front end to the height of the curb. \nIf cost is a barrier\, a limited number of tickets are available at a reduced rate to those with low incomes. Mosses are all around in the Sax-Zim Bog\, and they make up an important part in both the creation and support of bog ecosystems. However\, mosses and their bryophyte relatives can be difficult to identify. With a group of species that is hard to identify\, it is always a good approach to start by learning the familiar and common species. This field trip uses this approach to help familiarize attendees with common mosses. \nField Trip attendance is free for Friends of Sax-Zim Bog members. The $25 membership fee covers free entry to all field trips and programs\, excluding workshops\, in a 12-month period. \nRegistration is required at saxzim.org. Registrants meet at the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center and Lois King Education Center at 10 a.m. The field trip concludes at 2 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Duluth River Train excursions on the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad depart at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays until Oct. 18. The two-hour rail journey is a round trip along the St. Louis River estuary. It is a family-friendly\, volunteer-run event. \nThe narrated tour takes passengers along the original Lake Superior & Mississippi line in vintage coaches\, sharing the history of the community and its industries.  \nThe train ride can be paired with other outdoor activities along the estuary. The Choo-Choo Paddle Kayak Shuttle is an opportunity to paddle the National Water Trail. Passengers can also bring a bike to hit the scenic Marten Trail before or after the rail journey.  \nAll excursions depart from the ticket office at 6930 Fremont St. in West Duluth. Tickets are $26.20 for adults\, $12 for children ages 5-12 and free for ages 4 and under. Military veterans ride free on Sundays. \nRiders should arrive 20–30 minutes early for check-in. Snacks and refreshments are available onboard (cash only). Restrooms are available on the train. Due to their historic nature\, the vintage coaches are not wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:Family Program: Earth\, Moon & Sun
DESCRIPTION:Earth\, Moon & Sun is a full-dome planetarium show that explores lunar phases and teaches solar science through the character Coyote\, adapted from American Indian oral traditions. It also examines how humans learn through space exploration.  \nClosed captions are available upon request. The 4 p.m. show on Aug. 8 is a special sensory friendly edition. \nEach show is followed by a live presentation of the night’s sky. \nAdmission is $8 for adults; $5 for senior citizens ages 60 and up\, kids ages 3-12 and University of Minnesota Duluth students; and free for kids age 2 and under. Tickets are available at tickets.umn.edu or at the door. UMD students are required to show their student identification for the discounted admission. \nDoors open 30 minutes before showtime. Food and drinks are not allowed in the planetarium. Proof of purchase must be ready to show at the door.
