DESCRIPTION:This new field trip offers an introductory look into the weird\, wonderful world of flies\, moths and mites\, and the often identifiable signs they create on plants. Explore and learn to start noticing the easily-overlooked evidence of these creatures on leaves\, stems and branches. Hand lenses are available for use during the field trip. \nField Trip attendance is free for Friends of Sax-Zim Bog members. The $25 membership fee covers free entry to all field trips and programs\, excluding workshops\, in a 12-month period. \nRegistration is required at saxzim.org. Registrants meet at the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog Welcome Center and Lois King Education Center at 10 a.m. The field trip concludes at 3 p.m.

SUMMARY:Duluth River Train
DESCRIPTION:Duluth River Train excursions on the Lake Superior & Mississippi Railroad depart at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays until Oct. 18. The two-hour rail journey is a round trip along the St. Louis River estuary. It is a family-friendly\, volunteer-run event. \nThe narrated tour takes passengers along the original Lake Superior & Mississippi line in vintage coaches\, sharing the history of the community and its industries.  \nThe train ride can be paired with other outdoor activities along the estuary. The Choo-Choo Paddle Kayak Shuttle is an opportunity to paddle the National Water Trail. Passengers can also bring a bike to hit the scenic Marten Trail before or after the rail journey.  \nAll excursions depart from the ticket office at 6930 Fremont St. in West Duluth. Tickets are $26.20 for adults\, $12 for children ages 5-12 and free for ages 4 and under. Military veterans ride free on Sundays. \nRiders should arrive 20–30 minutes early for check-in. Snacks and refreshments are available onboard (cash only). Restrooms are available on the train. Due to their historic nature\, the vintage coaches are not wheelchair accessible.

DESCRIPTION:The Clover Valley Farm Trail is a co-operative group of locally-owned\, small farms located in or near Clover Valley\, a farming community between Duluth and Two Harbors. The farms offer a variety of produce\, plant seedlings\, baked goods\, crafts and other items sold from self-serve farm stands. Visitors can simply follow the map and posted directional signs to find each farm. Event organizers have described the trail as a place\, “where a farmers market meets a Sunday drive.”  \nThe 2026 Farm Trail season continues through early-October. During the formal season\, farm stands are open Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. Check the farm stand status list at clovervalleyfarmtrail.com under “Sunday” for occasional closures and additional hours.
