PDD Sightings

Perfect Duluth Day sighting at Mount Rushmore

Perfect Duluth Day sighting at Mount Rushmore

This summer I took the folks out west to visit family and began what I hope may become a growing gallery on PDD. Shots of the PDD sticker/logo and where it has traveled (or been spotted).

House of Donuts

duluth-house-of-donuts

I recently recovered this photo from my attic. It’s dated July 18, 1992. That’s me on the left in my Minnesota Twins championship T-shirt, proudly raising a bag full of what have got to be bear claws. PDD co-founder Barrett Chase is on the right. In the middle, grabbing his junk, is Bob Schulte.

For most of its existence, and at the time of the photo above, House of Donuts was located just east of where the Whole Foods Co-op is now, at 624 E. Fourth St. Ronald and Michele Carter were the owners.

Where in Duluth?

Vintage Duluth/Superior Flickr Pool

For those of you interested in vintage images of the Twin Ports, I thought I’d share a Flickr group I started to showcase all the vintage postcards, photos, maps and images stored on that site. The vintage postcards from Superior are my personal favorites. Please peruse, join the group and add any images you might have — I’d love to see the pool grow!

Chester Bowl Historical Photos

So, the brouhaha over the ski jumps reminded me about this project – some historical photos from Chester Bowl.

Duluth’s old Mathisen Tire Co.

Here’s another photo from the Cliff’s Barber Shop Collection. It’s from the spring or early summer of 1962, and the location is 400 E. Superior St. in Duluth. (PDD all-star points go to the person who can explain what this parade is all about. It might be the Fourth of July, but that’s totally a guess on my part.)

Enger Tower Rededication Photos

Pictures from the rededication of Enger Tower can be found at the Duluth Public Library’s Reference@Duluth blog.

Halloween banners

Who’s got groovy halloween photos? If you can crop them to ridiculously horizontal proportions and still see what’s going on in them, we want them!
We’re looking for Halloween banners to put at the top of PDD.

Some basic rules:
The image must be 960 pixels wide by 167 pixels high. The Perfect Duluth Day logo will be added by PDD’s art department.
The lower portion of banner photos serve as background to the navigation bar, so crop your image with that in mind. Make sure essential elements are not in the area that will be obscured.

If all of this is too much to wrap your head around, or you don’t have the right image editing software, just e-mail the uncropped photo, and we’ll do our best to crop it so it looks good.
Send them to [email protected].

Did anyone else see the kickass rainbow?

Photographing the Duluth Skyline

A few weeks ago I posted a general guide to photographic locations in Duluth. It was well received so I wanted to write another similar guide. This guide is all about the Duluth skyline. There are maps and directions to seven different places to get a great look at Duluth. Some places may be familiar, others may not. Even if you don’t go to take pictures, these seven spots are amazing for their scenic vistas. With fall in peak color now is the perfect time to get out. Check them out here.

Morning Lake Fog

Did anyone get any good pictures of the fog on Lake Superior this morning? I was up at about 6:30 and I have never seen a more stunning and beautiful example of it. Oh my! As I type there is a fishing boat going out! Wonderful!
