Oeuvre Magazine Theater Awards Official Ballot

While we’re doing all this voting, vote in this too!

Loup-Garou & Excuse Me, Princess at Amazing Grace

show flier for Oct 29

This Friday the 29th, treat yourself to some home-cooked and tasty tunes at the Amazing Grace Bakery and Cafe!

Loup-Garou and Excuse Me, Princess will be taking stage at 8pm to jam the jams you know and love as well as the ditties that will get stuck in your head once you hear them. Best part of it all – it’s completely FREE!

So if you didn’t get a ticket to Mumford and Sons but still want to feel like you’re doing something productive on a Friday night, come have a sandwich, coffee, tea, or some delectable cake while watching two of Duluth’s music-making conglomerates.

Da Houze of Flavor

DaHouzeOfFlavor

I guess I have a knack for walking past this building whenever a new sign is going up. (Like in 2006, when the Hip Hop Candy Shop opened; this is the same building, different storefront.)

Anyway, someone standing in the doorway told me Da Houze will be a record store and will open in a few weeks. So there’s the scoop. It’s on Fourth Street and First Avenue West.

The question that occurs to me now is, if it’s “Da Houze,” shouldn’t it be of “Flavah”? Is it just me, or should houses be of flavor, and houzes be of flavah?

Young at Heart Records on GoJohnnyGo.com

Young at Heart Records Pics on GoJohnnyGo.com

Nice trip down memory lane with some snapshots of Young at Heart Records from 1996 and recollections to fill them out. The pictures themselves are just snapshots, as I said, but upon close examination they do capture the feel and the spirit of that place nicely. I just wish there were more of them. Students at UMD organize a 12-hour dance marathon to support kids in need

Beginning at 6pm on Friday and ending at 6am on Saturday morning, Duluth students and local community members will stay on their feet, dancing to live music and DJs while interacting with patients and their families from Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare.  The Dance Marathon student organization is welcoming everyone at this event, emphasizing that participants need not be expert dancers.

North Shore Sessions: Russian Bride, Jeremy Messersmith

Here are a couple recent live music sessions featuring Minnesota artists recorded in the Duluth area — Russian Bride and Jeremy Messersmith:

WTAFS + Nomia + Atlas Mts : 10/16

For those who are fans of epic instrumental rock, Nomia is one of the best.

Here’s a clip from a performance on Radio K:

A Decade as Hot Rod

According to this blurb from the Oct. 18, 2000 issue of the Ripsaw, Cory Ahlm changed his name to Hot Rod 10 years ago this week.

Of course, Hot Rod would later expand his name to Hot Rod Heartthrob, and Bone Appetit would switch from being Duluth’s self-proclaimed “worst band” to its “sexiest band.”

Woah, that’s rock and roll.
